For more assured longevity replace the top inch of soil around the lewisia with some stone material like grit or clean gravel.

Is that why mine all croaked? They looked beautiful for two - three years and then ----- gone!

Lewisia does best in a pot or a pure rock garden. If planted in-ground with gritty soil and on a slope or raised area, they can survive for 10+ years. Out in the open around here, any one Lewisia can up-and-die in any one year. If the new rosette growth rots out or the stem-base of the plant becomes spongy, the end is near. I have a white bloomer that is spongy and will have to try to root the offsets this fall.

Keeping organic debris - including the plant's own dead leaves - away from the base of the plant has also been recommended. Except for Lewisia columbiana most of them are native to drier climates east and south of Vancouver, Seattle and the Willamette Valley.
