Love this buffet cabinet but...

I don’t think I’m going to like the color.

It’s the Lorelei cabinet from Pottery Barn. Would you buy it and have it painted? It’s MDF so I’m not sold on the idea. And it’s not cheap at $850. But it’s exactly the size I want and I love the design. Anyone have any suggestions for places to look for something similar? The size I want is 4-5’ wide, 35-38” high, no more than 18-20” deep. I have looked at World Market, Pier One, Crate and Barrel, Room and Board, Craig’s list, and 2 antique shops so far.

The only other furniture in the room will be a table similar to this, and these chairs.

I have several other mission oak pieces and I don’t want more, so I don’t want a matching buffet/sideboard. The dining room has a lot of detailed molding and I’d like to keep the furniture pretty clean lined to keep the focus on the architectural detail. The other furniture on the first floor is mostly a mix of Stickley mission oak, some walnut tables from Room and Board, and nonfussy upholstered pieces.

I’ve even looked at some Asian cabinets but didn’t find anything quite right. Other ideas? I am going to another big antique store tomorrow...

PS the goal here is “counter” space for entertaining as well as storage for dishes. I don’t want open display storage, definitely prefer solid doors.

$850 for mdf? Wow, I’d pass and look on CL for a solid wood one that you could paint if wood color not to your liking.

I’d also have a hard time paying that much for mdf. Unless you really love it...

Do you have a Nadeau near you?

I know, I know...that’s why I came here. So you could all talk me out of it. DH likes it a lot but I may have neglected to mention the MDF to him.

I don’t know what Nadeau is?

Wait! I do have a Nadeau near me! How did I not know this? Hang on, I’ll be back.

Oh Sue you're in trouble now! Nadeau is fun!

It's a ripoff and painted to disguise how poor quality the workmanship is. You can do better!

This is on the Boston CL at Manchester by the Sea for $575. It's a bit shorter in height than you showed, but otherwise fits your criteria -

    It measures 60"w x 19"d x 31.5"h.

Oh my! I have a Nadeau also! I've never heard of it but judging from the website they may be getting a lot of my money lol.

Try putting the one from hayneedle in your cart - you'll get an email offer the next day or so for a discount. Be sure to register for emails so they have your address, you can always unsubscribe later. And BTW I've now bought several things from Hayneedle and have been very pleased. Most recent purchase came damaged (bird bath), they contacted the mfg while on the phone with me and a new one is being shipped, no need to return the old one.

You guys are the best! So, I went to Nadeau today -- it just opened 6 weeks ago and is about 10 minutes from me. They had some cool stuff, but nothing quite right for this space. I might go back again because I'll be looking for a small bookcase for my home office.

Then I went to the big antique market and did not find a buffet but I did find a perfect-sized end table for the living room...for $90! It's not a fine piece of furniture but it's got interesting lines and I have been looking for a while for this size (28" round, 24" high). Just need to polish it up a bit.

I found this, too, online locally, and thinking about going to see it. I would want to darken it a bit, I think. It is a little deeper than I wanted but it could still work. And if I decided I didn't like it in the dining room, I could use it in my son's room.

My3dogs, thanks...I do want something a bit taller because I think it will look better in the space not to have the two main pieces of furniture at the same height. The chair rail in the room is at 39" or so, so I thought somewhere around 36-38" would be good.

I wish I could see the Hayneedle/PB piece in person. It's so tempting at that lower price. I may ask my painter, who's working at the house, for his opinion on painting it.

PS. Interesting that Hayneedle's description says "sturdy wood construction" and PB says "select hardwoods and MDF" -- maybe the interior shelves are MDF but the rest is real wood?

I put it in my cart on Hayneedle...if I get a coupon, I think I am going to order it. I love the design and the size, being only 16" deep, is perfect. Thanks so much, ilikefriday and DLM!!

maybe the interior shelves are MDF but the rest is real wood?

Most "wood" furniture these days is mdf veneered with thin slabs of real wood, which is not necessarily a bad thing. In the old days it was furniture board veneered with real wood.

How lucky for you Nadeau is so close! I now have to travel 2 hours to Charlotte for that and Ikea - sometimes I do miss my Chicago conveniences. Sign up for your local Nadeau Facebook page so you are notified of new shipments. Inventory changes all the time and different suppliers have very different looks. I regularly ask for price and dimensions on pieces pictures on FB so I know if it's worth making the trip.

I know that not everyone is a fan of Pottery Barn furniture, but I have secretary desk from PB that I absolutely love. That said, I don't know how well it would work to paint the Lorel buffet, especially with all of that detail. Too bad it isn't a color you want. What color did you have in mind?

DH is saying he would like us to find an antique piece, so the search will continue...

At first look, it reminded me of Hooker furniture. Look over their selection. You could always find a retailer or designer and order through them.

I am on the exact same hunt - same dimensions and everything, except the piece will be for our sunroom. I keep finding over priced cabinets made of mdf at all the usual suspects....Pottery Barn, Wayfair, etc. I haven’t found anything on our Craigslist, either. I think I’m going to start visiting local furniture stores and continue to keep my eye on Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace.

Adding to my dilemma is the fact that this sideboard/buffet will be seen from several rooms due to the layout of the house, and because the dining room has so many architectural details, I feel that it needs to be fairly simple so it’s not competing with the elements in the room.

I kinda like this, even though I’m not into MCM generally. I think the dark knobs make it work well with my dark wood dining room table.

Keep checking the online auction websites like eBay and ebth.com.

A lot of antique buffets are really not that expensive anymore and you can find a nice one for about $500-$1000. I purchased one last year and to my delight it was a W. & J. Sloane--didn't know that until after purchasing! It is one cool piece, even though it is "brown." :D

    Found this today...I’m in love.
