Surprise! Asiatic lillies!

We moved into this house last year, fall, and these had already died. I didn't know what they were until they came back. We're lucky to have this added color in our front garden. We have six plants ready to bloom.

is there anything I need to do to keep them gorgeous and alive? They get morning and early afternoon light for about 5 hours and then shade of rest of the day. Theyre watered 2x week. Will they bloom next year?

They'll come back every year and multiply like crazy. Beware of the red lily beetle and its feces covered larva. Disgusting bugs that will eat your plants full of brown holes. Tap them into a can of soapy water. Larvae have to be picked off by hand. Yuck.

Personally, I dug mine out because of 3 times a day beetle patrol. I had a few good years with the plants, though. Lovely flowers. Easy to grow except for the beetles.

I have those too-I love them and they are super easy. I just throw ‘em in the ground and forget ‘em.

Oops, one thing. I do try to watch for slugs, they will decimate a lily!!!

Watch for the red lily beetle too! you can't muss them --they are bright red. Their larva looks like a glob--almost like bird droppings and will eat your lily down to the ground. Nothing much kills them. The best way is to hand pick the beetles and drop them into soapy water. If you do it in the spring they won't have a chance to lay eggs.

Thanks for the heads up on the beetle. I had no idea. I'm excited the colors are brilliant oranges and reds in a bed of green box holly; wish they faced the street but they were planted facing the front door which is still beautiful.

They look very happy there and the colors are stunning!! Lilies - like all bulbs - need to have the foliage left in place after flowering to ripen and mature to recharge the bulb for the next growing season. Unfortunately, maturing lily foliage is not the most attractive feature but resist the temptation to cut it back and remove it. After it dries and turns brown you can cut back the stems but I always leave a short stub in place to indicate where the bulbs are so as not to disturb them if planting anything else in the area.

@gardengal. thank you so much for that advice. probably because I didn't know what they were and I left them there, they came back so vibrant this year. they're in a really nice place, on the interior of our walkway shielded by box holly, yet they get wonderful morning and early afternoon sun.
