Sitting room/ kitchen area

Need decorating advice on this space. Need ideas on lighting fixtures, accessories and any other ideas or comments you would like to add. The kitchen is to the right in the first photo and to the left in the second photo. Thank you in advance!

There are a few things I am confused about. why did you put the tv over the fireplace in this room? What is the real purpose of this space? The sofa seems small but yet too large for the room. I like your large artwork but it makes the sofa look small. also, there are two small pieces of art on the other wall.

This seems like a room that would do much better with 4 chairs and a square rug rather than what is there now.

You have very nice taste, and the colors look great. The first thing I would do here is getting a new dining fixture. To finish this space. then decide if you need a ceiling fan in the other space.

If you need to keep that sofa, I would say your best option is a larger rug with two chairs opposite the sofa and an ottoman. one table between the two chairs, consider putting the larger art somewhere else, as the scale of the room needs to be in mind, the windows either need to panels or switch to roman shades.

    Hi Ruth,

I'd like to start by saying the obvious: you have a beautiful and large space, lots of natural light, gorgeous floors and a beautiful couch, and that amazing art piece above your couch!

If this was my home, this is what I would do to bring it up a little:

    - add a coffee table

    - add another seat (an armchair or a club chair) facing the TV but a little crooked, to make a conversation area. I would chose a non-neutral colour for contrast

    - add a couple more pillows on the couch, or a plaid, to dress it up a little more

    - get a bigger rug in the living room to properly define the zone. I think that in your space you can [follow the rule of thumb[(https://www.houzz.com/magazine/size-up-the-right-area-rug-for-your-room-stsetivw-vs~33334058) (Houzz article) to have the rug going under the sofa and other seats' legs because it's a big open space and you want to frame the zones

    - move the plant towards the dining room (other side on the second picture) so it doesn't block off the natural light in front of the window

    - remove the baskets from the corner next to the couch and put a side table with a table lamp for additional light in the evening and to light up your smaller frames. It will also anchor that space a little more. Alternatively, you could get a small console to put under the smaller frames

    - open the curtains in a symmetric manner (away from the TV), if possible get larger curtain rods to open the curtains wider - more info in [this Houzz article[(https://www.houzz.com/magazine/how-to-hang-your-curtains-just-right-stsetivw-vs~70421165)

    - about the window treatment, do you need the vertical blinds for privacy or other reasons?

    - in terms of room, would it be possible to move the dining table so that it is centered under the dining room pendant lamp? About the lamp, do you want a modern or traditional look? And in the living room, do you want to keep the fan/lamp combo on the ceiling?

    - do you love your dining chairs? in my opinion they're a little too dark and "chunky"

    - add gold accents picked up from the artwork, for instance on the pot for the plant, accessories on the table, nothing tacky but just to have the eye travel around the whole room

    - add fresh flowers and plants, it brings life to a space (flowers in vases, orchids, small and medium sized plants, herbs for the kitchen...)

    - out of curiosity, what do you have on the dining room wall behind the table? (where the picture is taken from on the first photo) It could be interesting to draw the eye towards that area with wallpaper, if you're up for it :-)

I hope you don't feel that I'm criticising your home, I know I've talked about a lot of things but it's just advice I picked up from reading magazines / websites / watching design shows.

Hope it helps (and doesn't frighten you!)

    Have a nice day

Thanks so much! Yes, I agree with the rug size is the color ok? Are there any lighting fixtures or coffee tables on Houzz that you could recommend? There is another window to the left of the dining room table.

I agree with RL Relocation about the TV and furniture locations. People have been brainwashed that there can only be one focal point in a room, so the TV must go above the fireplace. If your TV were angled downward it might be OK, but it's not. A TV is at its best height when a sitting person's eyes are level with the bottom 1/3 of the screen. The TV would be at a better height on the wall where the art is now.

It strikes me that you want this room to be informal. You've chosen a bar height kitchen table and wicker (?) baskets as end tables for the sofa, but the sitting area still seems formal. Perhaps a more mundane and recognizable subject in the artwork would relax the feel of the sitting area.

Let's say you move the TV against the wall. Look for a long, low stand as a base for the wall in a medium brown wood. With the TV against the wall people seated at the kitchen table can also watch easily. Add art to the wall on both sides of the TV. Move the sofa opposite the TV if there is room, or replace it with a loveseat. Add two matching chairs for versatility in how you use the space. A print or pattern on the chairs can add to the room. Use the larger of the two wicker storage pieces as a coffee table in front of the sofa/loveseat. The smaller one seems too small for more than storage, so look for an end table to fit between the chairs.

Rug is too small, color is neutral if the monochromatic look is what you are going for. Curtain rods too high, they should be about half way between top of window and ceiling. Panel on left window should be on left side.

Do you want to keep your ceiling fan? I do think you could use more lighting in the room. A floor lamp to the right of the sofa would add light to read by and won't be as harsh as the overhead light from the fan. A ceiling fixture that can be swagged over so it can be centered on the table is a good idea. A beaded chandelier would work well in your space over the table.

The rug that jck910 showed is a nice choice and works well with your wall color and sofa as well as the artwork.

I would suggest you hem your curtains so they're about 1/2" inch off the floor and pull the panel on the left to the outside of the window.

I think your blue lumbar pillow is very pretty but suggest you replace the brown with something a little brighter. These would be beautiful with your artwork and add some texture as well.

A glass coffee table or pair of garden stools would be a good place to set down a drink or magazine.
