Off Topic...dishwasher needed

On topic if we wash ball caps in the dishwasher...I don't. Lol

I've decided not to repair the old Maytag. My son is going to buy me one instead. Here's my must haves. Can't be over 500 less is better. Must have a super hot wash so heater is a must. I don't rinse but do scrape well. Multiple loads a day probably two. I don't care about noise level or color. Manual cleaning of filter is fine as long as its not after each load and its easy to access. Long wash times are fine.

Am I dreaming. Can I find a dishwasher in this price range with very hot washes new not used?

I need your help.

PS...NO Frigidaire

Yep you will clearly hear the motor struggling to battle the suds.

I know auto dishwasher detergent has come a long way since 2011 when it was newly formulated (phosphates just removed) hopefully this dw doesnt struggle. Believe me if it does i will try phosphates. If that doesnt solve than the dw goes back for a different one.

First real load running. Lots of coffee cups, a smallish stainless tray from the toaster oven, several small coffee cups used for pudding last night, 2 oatmeal bowls, and just normally soiled dinner dishes nothing too heavily soiled. I used Heavy, high temp, and sani rinse. I'm not sure the time but think around 3&1/2 hours. I used a Finish power ball. Nothing else. I don't hear the motor struggling with suds at least not yet. I'll let you know what the end results are.

Its doing the sani rinse. Temp is at 161.4. Unsure how much longer it has to go.

Done!!! Everything was spotless. Every piece of flatware, oatmeal cups , cupd with dried pudding, small SS sheet pans from toaster oven everything. Shiny and polished looking...not even a smudge remained. Next I hope to have a over load of stuck on heavy soils.

Boba to bad you don't live around here you could teach me how to load for the famous BOB loads.

    So far I'm pleasantly surprised.

Question. ..there was quite a bit of water in the wash and rinse...way more than I expected. I think I read this is a tier 1. Would that make a difference in dishwashers like it does in clothes washers?

@mamapinky - you are right up to date girlfriend! Truly don't think you will need the phosphated stuff. That Finish and the others work really well and I have a POC DW right now that is so noisy it is hard to hear the TV at full blast when it's going. Sigh. Should be my worst problem.

More water the better. Sounds as if it did well.

Roc, it feels good not to have to play around and babysit the dw. I should have replaced the old POC one I had years ago.

I'm sorry your stuck with a dw that you clearly don't like much less love. Its temporary right? It saddens me knowing your life isn't at peace right now. One day Roc. One day.

Sparky. I shoulda taken pics I will next load for sure. I just put a really nasty SS roaster in that I baked a meatloaf in this morning. So I will for sure do some pics.

Hey Mama, you probably don't need to use the heavy cycle for everyday loads. You'll save water and energy using a lighter cycle without sacrificing performance. I can count on one hand the times I've used a heavy wash in the last five years.

sparky, I've had peeks at the water coming through the disposal. I've never seen an inordinate amount of suds coming through.

Suds are more likely to be in the tub due to the water spray than visible in the drain output.

Congratulations on the dishwasher! I know you'll enjoy it. Late to the party, but I thought I'd tell you I use Cascade Complete from Costco and I've been happy with that one. And like you, I could not be less interested in the noise my dishwasher makes. I'm more interested in clean dry dishes.

I have an approx. 13 yr old Kitchen Aid and I like it very much. When here for another reason, the service man says their lifespan is about 12 years ;0(. He likes the current Bosch as a replacement if anyone is interested, and he's factory authorized for both so has no 'horse in the race'.

I do use Finish rinse aid on the lowest dispensing setting or I don't always find all dishes have dried.

From your mouth to God's ears @mamapinky. But I doubt it. The DW works IFYKWIM and that should be my worst complaint, right?

Yesterday I used the normal, high temp on a load of normal soils. I threw in a SS pan that was used to simmer spaghetti sauce all day so a nice stuck on ring. Everything was spotless except the pot. The stuck on ring was half gone but a saucy mess thruout the pot still. I used powdered Cascade. So I tried again using heavy and high temp with a Finish pod. The ring was gone but still had residue sauce here and there. thing is it came out easily with just a paper towel. sigh

May need to try loading in different areas/ angles. Plus when mine was new I wasn't satisfied with it compared to the old one. After I used it a month or so it was like it finished the break in period and hit high gear. Been fine ever since. Maybe that sounds silly but it really was that way.

Mama, I am interested to know how you could tell what the rinse temperature was?!

    last modified: 8 years ago

Mama, I've found I have more water changes with heavy soil and Normal or Auto cycles. In fact, I pretty much use the equivalent of heavy as default and add high-temp for extremely heavy soil. I've found that with heavy soil and using either Normal or Auto without any temp options, it takes much longer for the cycle versus just using heavy soil and no temp options or heavy with high-temp. And also, there's no need to push high-temp and sani-rinse. If you select sani-rinse, that also gives you the high-temp wash temp too.

One thing that really surprised me with my whirlpool was the wash temp most cycles. l05*! That warm not hot. The sani gets up to 150 something for the final rinse with the wash temp of 135. I don't run it everyday, so I knew just the normal cycle,as is, wouldn't cut it. Now I always use the sani cycle. Even the high temp, 135* is too cool for raw meat dishes, ect for me.

Mama, once you get over the learning curve you will love it. Again, so happy for you, it's a little less for you to worry about. Blessing to you and your family. And what a wonderful thing your son has done for you!

105°F wash temperature relies on detergent enzyme action and long wash time instead of high temperature to deal with soil. That being said, majority of households have the water heater set at 120°F or higher so the incoming water temperature is higher than 105°F (helps to run the kitchen faucet to a hot flow before starting the dishwasher) ... the dishwasher just doesn't contribute heating to increase or maintain the temperature higher than 105°F, unless high-temp options or a stronger cycle than Normal are selected.

    last modified: 8 years ago

I use Sani rinse about as much as I do Rinse only which is never. My hi temp wash is 145 and final rinse normal cycle is 140. Then heat dry, I have checked with a thermometer in silver basket and it was 172-173 during dry. I always heat dry.

    Thanks everyone.

I really really like this dw'er. I had a nice large load yesterday..plates had dried on overnight cheese from mac and cheese. The corning ware casserole of course was a baked on dried on cheesy mess as were the flatware. Heavy , high temp and a Cascade platinum pack. Everything was spotless, shiny, smooth, polished. The heavy and high temp seems to be my sweet spot. I haven't tried the *soak and clean* cycle yet but its the longest cycle at 400 and of course adding high temp or sani rinse is going to extend it more. I should probably give it a try on an expecially tough load. Thoughts on *soak and clean??

The manual lists each wash cycle and its function and time..it also lists *Added water (gallons) but it doesn't say if the amount of water added is for wash cycle only or from beginning to end including prewash and rinses. ??

Bea I have wondered about raw meat stuff...what is the recommended way of washing these things. For instance a dinner plate holding my raw chicken. Should I be using Cascade gel with chlorine on this type of stuff? And is there even enough chlorine in a dose to sanitize dishes.

mamapinkyo - Meat is so dangerous these days, loaded with all sorts of bacteria, and in 41 years, I’ve never worried about raw meat stuff in the dishwasher. No matter which brand DW, I always use a normal cycle, everyday detergent du jour, and we’ve never gotten sick. I’ve even washed the wood cutting boards with soap and water in the sink. Our dog is on a raw diet and her plates go into DW, as well the dinner plates I use to cut it up (frozen 2-lb bricks). No special treatment. I pay close attention to avoiding cross-contamination in the prep stages.

I would be more worried about the counter top that raw chicken might have dripped on than the plate it touched and then went in the dishwasher. If you are really worried put item in the sink with water and a little bleach. I use Clorox wipes on counters myself. Haven't gotten poisoned yet. Ha.

You could put a table spoon of bleach in the dishwasher when you start it. Mark from AW does that with every load but he uses a shot glass full.

Was reading latest picks from Consumer Reports and Kirkland tabs from Costco are #1 and I believe Members Mark from Sam's is #2.

Added water is simply the potential maximum amount of additional water from addition fills from beginning to end, not simply the main wash phase. There've only been a few times I wished I'd had the 7-hour Soak & Clean. If you ever venture forth using this, as per the manual, make sure you put detergent in the prewwasah cup too. I'm thrilled you love this new toy. I'd be cautious about adding any chlorine bleach to the dishwasher. Interferes with the enzymes of the detergent.

Boba1, you know Mark, ( Wpool duet) at AW and sometimes on here also says he always adds the bleach because he uses Finish tabs for main wash. At least I think I remember that correctly. Have you ever seen where he talked about doing that?

Yes I have. I just don't think modern enzyme detergents need bleac, especially without an interrim rinse between prewash and main wash.

I have read Mark adding a shot glass of bleach also. When I spoke of bleach I was talking about Cadcade gel with chlorine in it. I do know bleach kills enzymes. Like Boba I ddon't advise it without a darn good rinse between the bleach and the enzyme detergent. But remember there are still a few chlorine based detergents on the market.

Thank You guys...you are the best-est

Mama, heavy is my sweet spot too. I don't think you need to use a chlorine base detergent. Just push the sanitize button if you're concerned.

I have never been happy with a hypochlorite based detergent. Palmolive ECO is ok, however it left my dishes looking dull and old. Mama, since your machine does extra purges and rinses before the main wash, a little bit might be ok.

I just finished making 60 stuffed cabbages. Their in the oven now. Anyway I have a big stainless steel pan that I mixed the hamburger and white rice in....do I dare put it in the DW'er...I did use a paper towel to remove the rice stuck on..I can use sani rinse.

I think I will use the dw. I do have Cascade gel with chlorine so I'll use that just as an extra precaution. I'm enjoying having a dw again...really cuts down on my work. And the boys are my unload the dw helpers when their home. Win win.

Make certain to run the h20 in your sink 1st to make it hot, THEN start the dishwasher. Try it. And please post your results. Push every selection in the dryer selection: Sani Rinse, Heated Drying, ____, & _____. Also engage Pot-Scrubber mode. Good Luck!

First off, YUM. Second, just scrape a majority of the rice off. It should be good!

If I'm not mistaken the last DW detergent test CR did, they said Palmolive Eco beat Cascade gel. Cascade Complete gel was rock bottom last. Years ago it was one of the best I had ever used, powder, tabs or liquid. Funny how things change.

Patti, energy standards have eliminated very hot dry periods. On more recent Whirlpool produced products, when the homeowner selects sani rinse and heated dry, the sani rinse will cause the heating element to pulse (at best during the dry phase). My Kitchen-aid derivative Kenmore Elite has an extended heated dry option and a little fan also comes on once the dishwasher reaches a certain heat level during dry. I tried ONCE Pots & Pans with sanirinse and extended heated dry. The drying phase was almost 1.5 hours and the little fan never came on. So that was the last time I used that combination of options because the extra timer really didn't do much better than just sanirinse and then open the door to flash dry once the cycle is complete.

Hi kids. Was thinking about you all and your valuable advice. Thank You.

I've done enough loads now to give me a real feel about this DW....I like it. I can't believe how well this works considering its a BOL.

As far as detergents go I like the Cascade platinum the best. It really is a workhorse. The Cascade complete powder left a sticky feel on the dishes. Most of my loads are full and heavily soiled since there's 5 of us and I cook daily. My goto cycle is Heavy duty, high temp, sani rinse. I know chosing sani without high temp raises the wash temp but unless I misunderstood the manual chosing high temp and sani raises wash temp another 5 deg. LOL. I never find any dirty dishes...everything is flawlessly clean and shiny. Iput a small stainless steel pan in that I sauteed onions in a little to long and had a stuck on burnt on mess inside bottom around edges..spotless. I did another tall ice tea glass smeared in peanut butter..spotless. The cherry on the top...I don't have to baby sit this machine like my old one. Some of you may remember I had to turn the dial back around to continue the wash time as it was so short. Someone once told me that a vintage DW is better than a modern day TOL well not my Frigidaire.

My boys are done with school for the summer and their new favorite chore is to unload the DW. Glad they enjoy it because thats one job I don't enjoy.

Oh, I had some company that I served iced tea and ginger cookies to. I had sn empty DW so I ran all the glasses, and spoons, thru on the one hour cycle. Everything was clean so I suppose this cycle will work on some things afterall. I'll hsve to try it again on a fuller load.

Anyway I Thank You all for your help.

Anyone try any new dw detergent?

I use the cascade platinum pods. They work very well. I was using the 7th Generation Liquid detergent before. Sometimes it worked well sometimes not.

Question about Finish tablets. I have a package that the tablets are wrapped in a clear plastic coating and another package that their individually wrapped in a foil package...which ones are the newest on the market?

    last modified: 8 years ago

The individual wrapped are the Max version are they not and the clear ones are the Quantum version-- right?

    Newest are the clear ones.

    last modified: 8 years ago

The candy wrapper style is usually labeled “Powerball”, I think? It used to be, a couple years ago. All versions have been “updated” in packaging and possibly formula. Looking at the current product list on Finish’s website, the All In One is the type that left mystery gunk on my Bosch filter and sparked an epic topic convo on the appliances page here. I avoid any iteration that looks like it.

I have excellent results with “Quantum” versions, including the latest one.

Can't say Sparky as all the finish tablets were dumped out of original packaging into a tin. So I haven't a clue as to what's what. Lol

Sparky, the "Quantum" are the weird looking ones with three chambers and aren't a solid tablet.

We have been using Quantum in the Bosch with no issues whatsoever. I actually prefer the older style Quantum Max, but it isn't that big of a deal. I might give Target Up & Up a try after I finish some of these packs up. ALSO, amazon is exclusively carrying Cascade Platinum Plus. Tempting...

    Wow time flys.

Just figured I'd update. The DW is still working fantastic. There have been a few times that I thought I could wait until the next day to run it than ran out of room midway thru the day. Most of my loads are heavily soiled and needs the long hottest cycle. I wanted a load done faster yesterday so I used the quick 1 hour. I also used powdered Cascade Complete which doesn't work well even in a long cycle so I cut it with STPP....absolutely amazing results. I now know with the added phosphates I can get perfectly clean dishes fast if I need them. Also saves me money since I can use this big box of Cascade.

My daily driver is the Finish tablets. Nothing gets past them and no suds issues and no phosphates needed.

I don't have great results with Cascade pacs either so instead of just letting them sit I will add the STPP with them. Better than wasting them. I just know in the future to buy the Finish and be done...but really that does take some of the fun out of it. LOL.

I do wish I had some of the Cascade Boil Out though for loads I'd like to bleach. LOL.

How's the summer treating you all? Any new detergents for disher or clothes?

Mamap - I've had unsatisfactory results with the powder Cascade, too, and I always use the long "Auto" cycle. I like it for those express cycles full of glassware, which rarely happens, and for big ole bob-loads that need a little bit extra beyond the pod.

    last modified: 8 years ago

I’m not in the kitchen at the moment to check, but I think I use the Finish Quantum (?) packets and Finish rinse aid. Both work well as far as I can tell. Mama do you use a rinse aid? I didn’t read all the previous comments so I may have missed that part.

Sammy I do use a rinse aid. Cascade. I thought about not using one or trying without one at first but when son was hooking this up he put the small sample bottle of Cascade rinse aid that came with the machine in before I had a chance to tell him not to. I really didn't want to use it since I'm assuming it will be on the finished dishes. I didn't want the boys having the chemicals in their food.

Cavimum I do lots of full loads but haven't done a bob load yet. Lol. I need Boba over here to show me how to load for a true Bob load. Lol.

One thing that I don't like about this is the flatware basket. It can be on the door freeing up space but its a bit small. So I put the basket from my old dw in which fit on bottom rack along front. Still have the original one on the inside of the door so I now have plenty of flatware space.

I had forgotten you bought a Whirlpool. Glad you are liking it. Noticed the other day that LG is now making some of the Kenmore elite models where Whirlpool used to make the majority. At one time Bosch made a few branded Kenmore but that seemed short lived.

About the Finish, I don't like the new quantum as much as the previous one. New one doesn't seem to clean as well or maybe it's just me.

And sometimes it is suds galore with Cascade platinum pacs, sometimes not. Just hit or miss.

Mama, I think we have twin dishwashers. I had to give up on Finish powder that I used in the old Maytag because it started leaving a film on my glasses. The Finish Quantum paks are working great.

Possibly I was overdosing? the Finish powder, though. I cut back on it some when I got the new Whirlpool but maybe not enough.
