I would swap out the mirror for a larger one. The scale seems off with the height of the lamp and size of the console.

Get rid of everything on it. The scale of every object there is too small. The effect of a large amount of small objects is fussy cluttery gramma. The only object that can stay is the wicket chest. But only if it serves an actual purpose.

Master scale and proportion, and start adding minimal objects back. No fake plants or family photos. If an object is smaller than a laptop, it doesn’t belong. A large handsomely bound leather photo album would be fine, but not all of the tiny little faces peering at you.

One LARGE action photo of a family member would also be fine. No high school graduation pictures, or portrait sittings. Nothing static and boring that doesn’t reveal character. Those are for the album. If you hang glided in Peru, and have a great action shot of that, fine. As long as it is at least 8x10.

A large piece of art, or a much larger mirror for over the console. A larger less frilly lamp too.

In addition to scale, you need to master negative space. Every surface of everything does not need to be occupied or covered. Leave breathing room.

Definitely a bigger mirror. And I know everyone loves to display photos, but I don’t care for the look of different frames leaning on a table. I think photos look better displayed in similar frames on the wall, but that’s just me. Maybe change out the plant for something more modern?

Remove everything from top and bottom. You can put all four photo frames on top or a single larger object such as a bowl the size of a breadbox. A new mirror would be good.

Because I only received 1 response and I'm headed out shopping this weekend, just looking for some help!

if you love family photos (and i do!) scan them in and load them on a photo frame. program it to show one photo a day. every morning you'll delight at the 'random' choice displayed, instead of having to do a lot of dusting of items that cease to catch your eye.

Ninigret, I'm actually quite tired of looking at the same photos. I've slowly been removing them from different areas within the house, just ready to change things up a bit.

Regarding her recommendation for negative space, it would be helpful to see the entire room and the area by the back door. You might well not need to have anything there. Unless there are items that would be helpful to have on the table when you use the back door. Like a pretty dish for keys, etc.

Also, I much prefer items NOT placed at an angle, but placed squarely and straight. The angled placement, especially when used so repetitively, just looks odd to me.

If you like the mirror, just lower it four to six inches. Get a shorter fatter lamp with a more modern shade. Lamp on right, as you have it now, and on the left a live viney plant and put the crystal globe you have on the bottom shelf...over by the plant. For the bottom shelf, only the basket centered. If there is one favorite photo, then put it on the lower shelf by the basket.

I would do a larger mirror and a shorter, chunkier lamp....start with that and then see...

So first off, this isn't a table. And then things need to make sense. To me it makes no sense to hang a mirror over a piece of furniture unless it will be used to check your look on the way out. So does this area lead to the back yard only (where you don't need to see what you look like there) or does this lead to a garage that you use to come and go (?) I would in some way update the color of that furniture piece ... whether you stain it an espresso or you paint it a flat black. Then I would hang one large art piece over it. I would remove all of the little items you have all around it and decorate with a few larger pieces that somehow correspond to how that piece and that space will be used. Do you need a lamp in that area ... again do you come home at night through that space from a garage entry? Do you need a tray for keys if this door leads to the garage? No personal framed photos. Why would you be going to that space to pick out a magazine to read? What could you possible put in a small glass jar reaching down that far? You get the idea. Think in those terms.

We would recommend removing everything from the table. If you want a mirror, try a bigger one first. Hang it in the middle, then place baskets on the bottom, not photos. Then once you have the mirror hung you can try a variety of items on the table like a plant or a vase. We have a few examples of our designs that might help though.

Here is the final outcome, a larger mirror will come at a later point, but it's a start!

Better but the candlesticks are too high and it is too cluttered so I would put the books under the case to make it taller. Remove tiny photo and silver ball thing. I am glad to hear a larger mirror is on the agenda.
