Watering

I finally have unfurling going on and some are still pips.It has been unusually dry this Spring.The soil looks a bit like the desert.Should I start to water?

take a hand trowel .. and dig a few 3 to 6 inch holes around the garden ... AND THEN FIND OUT HOW MUCH MOISTURE THERE IS IN THE ROOT ZONE ... and then water accordingly ... [root zone is dependent on plant size ....]

e.g. in my sand ... the surface always looks bone dry .. so just looking at it .. really tells you nothing ... so you have to learn how it all works in whatever type of soil you have

i always did something such as this.. aka insert finger and find out. but i really learned the lesson when i put in drip irrigation ... and found out.. that no one can really tell you how moisture moves in your soil.. and that is why all the websites are rather vague about how long it takes.. to water deeply... into the root zone ...
