I do like the GE best with the long center burner vs. a small round one in center. If I have only 6” of separation from the fridge to stove do you think I need to stick with GE for fridge too so handles are the same? I like the kitchen aid fridge but those handles are very different. They should sell them all without handles and you could just pick separately.

Yes I agree - I only do bacon in microwave. I really wanted induction but I need to run 220 and electrician doesn’t think we have room in panel. He wants to come out and re label circuits for 150.00 before deciding if I have room in the box because people before us totally messed that up it’s all mislabelled.

Sounds like that needs to happen regardless of the range decision. At only $150, I’d make that a top priority. A modern kitchen has a LOT of electrical requirements to meet that may not even be possible with an old panel that’s full. You may need a service upgrade to do the remodel at all. Even with a gas range.

You can fix the labeling yourself. Station one person at the box with a notepad and phone and turn them all off, then turn on one at a time while another person roams the house and sees which is which.

Yeah, I will probably have him see if he can come out this week. Appliances and a floor are probably the extent of my remodel. I don’t see any cabinets in my future sadly. My dishwasher has been broken since November and fridge is on its last legs and my microwave was actually recalled about 15 years ago - lol!

You will still need a dedicated 110 line for a gas range, and a dedicated line for the hood, and the fridge. So you will definitely need to deal with electrical. Sooner than later is always better.

Well had the electric box relabeled and we do have a open circuit to run the 220 for induction if I want for 400. He also said we should replace whole panel because it is a stab-lok panel and they have a history of not tripping when circuits are overloaded or surge. Just my luck! That will cost another 1100.00. Is it worth the 400.00 to get a induction? I don’t know anyone who has one to try out I’ve only used gas. I know I need to do the panel thing just not sure if extra 400 is worth it.

Induction is far superior to gas. It has the cleanabikity that you want, while still having the rapid response of gas. In addition, gas puts about half or more of the heat it produces into the room rather than heating your pan. Induction is above 95% efficient in creating a heated pan if it has a decent magnetic metal content.

We were long-time lovers of gas and cook a ton. Our current house doesn’t have gas so we put in induction. I was worried, but it has turned out great—as Sophie notes it is very easy to clean (MUCH better than gas) and just as responsive as gas. In another house where I could have gas now, I’d still opt for induction. So I think it’s worth the $400.

Thank you Sophie and hko for your input. I will go back to store and start shopping inductions. I think they are sick of seeing me over and over again. I’ve been very indecisive about appliances. We’re retired now so I keep thinking I’m stuck with whatever for rest of my life -lol.

Jan Moyer - I’m back to gas to because I cannot do the induction without major interior damage to upgrade electric. You recommended GE and I wonder which one you suggest I’m looking at the profile slide in look. Seeing online of people saying the knobs get extremely hot? Has that been your experience - I’m assuming you have a GE?

I've got a trick for maintaining stainless steel: WD40. It takes off drips and fingerprints and leaves the finish looking great. I spray it on a cotton rag, wipe over the surface and then wipe with a separate dry rag. Afterwards, fingerprints don't show up like they used to.

I'm sure there will be people here who say that voids the warranty, it's bad for xyz, etc. I've been doing it periodically (every 2-3 months), wiping clean when there's a drip or dribble in between. It looks nicer and stays looking great for a good while after.

Thanks for the tip. The ones I’ve narrowed to are all stainless now the kitchenaid, Ge, and lg studio. So many horror stories on Kitchenaid and LG I’ve read recently makes me think I’m gonna go GE and hope it’s the right decision. So stressful for me as my stove still functions flawlessly right now but it’s white and I have to replace my other appliances because they are broken or failing. They don’t build anything to last anymore it’s depressing.

It used to be that an additional warranty was a waste of money. I spoke to an appliance repairman recently and he said it was a good investment, that they're just not making things to last anymore. It's a shame, because I had a Kitchen Aid dishwasher that was 34 years old and still working when I replaced it. *sigh*

Yup - we are spending about 5000.00 total on appliances and now realize they will only last about 8 years and will almost guarantee they will need repairs during that time. In my 30 years of homeownership I’ve only had 2 dishwasher fails and now a fridge that sounds about to fail - those days of 20 year appliances are over.
