Tubers have water in them. Could be the dry winter you had in soucal.

I was thinking maybe the last dry summer kept trees from producing the fruit they usually do. Still.... hordes all at the same time? I didn't know squirrels traveled in packs.

Hmm, I’m in West Hills, just west of Woodland Hills, about 4 miles or so from your DD. I’m not sure if this is why but they *are* doing a lot of construction, a new housing development, just northwest of Valley Circle and Roscoe. I know they removed some large established oak trees and other trees while they were clearly all the land. The West Hills community was petitioning them not to remove the trees, but lost. That may have driven wildlife south. It’s also very dry, as you know. This is the first time I’ve ever had something coming by and eating/taking bites, out of my lemons. They are thirsty.

Oh my goodness! On that note, this morning at ~8am, I was getting off the 101 at the valley circle/Mulholland dr. exit after dropping my son at school when something caught my eye in the little barren triangle of land between the freeway exit and the overpass. I thought they were bunnies at first but then I realized it was more than a dozen squirrels racing around together and digging. It really was surprising! I’ve never seen such a number “working” together. So weird. Maybe it’s your DD squirrel pirate gang out plundering and pillaging.
