Did you clean the washer and dryer before using them? Were there instructions to do so?

Hmmm...maybe call LG Customer Service and see what they say. We have a two year old LG top loader and never had this happen.

Shoemaker, have you searched online? I did a quick search for "gray stains on clothes after washing." Looks like lots of links with info.

My thought was that there is some part of the machine that has been lubricated and is running into washing machine (or dryer). Contact Mfg.

I never put bleach in my top load dispenser anymore. 6 washes later, bleach spots on clothing. Same thing happened to sis.

Yes. Too many clothes in the washer. We used to have a top loading washer and I was used to putting a lot of clothes in (large load size). This machine, however, really only accepts a few clothes at a time (if I were to guess a number: probably 8 shirts max to give you an idea). Whenever I put too many shirts, wham! the spots reappear. I hope this helps you and things work out for you.

And no, the spots never wash out. Once the shirt gets a spot, in the trash bin. So sad.

OMG. Same for us. But that is not supposed to happen with a good washer. It is made to take large amounts of cloths. There is def something wrong with the washer. I have the same problem and LG saying that there is nothing wrong with it after 3 tech visits and they are refusing to replace it. There is certainly something wrong with it! It must be leaking oil into drum or something. What did LG tell you?

You throw a shirt that could be a play or work shirt in the trash? Granted, it's not acceptable for donation but don't you need shirts for when you doing stuff that'll get you dirty or sweaty? Seems like a waste of a perfectly good shirt

Bought a brand new washer cause I was having the same issue new washer doing it too I'm starting to think it's either build up in the pipes or possibly fabric softener?

I had a whirlpool. I just bought an LG. I don't think it's the washing machine guys. It's the pipes prob a pile up of HE detergent.

Perhaps it is the HE detergent. I have been using regular liquid detergent and nothing has happened to my washing machine. It's still working fine.

Brand new home - brand new pipes - no fabric softener used

Normally, I'd run a sanitary (boiling) wash cycle to dissolve any residues that may have been built up over time; but in this case, since the machine is brand new I'd say you have a case for returning it as defective, there's clearly something getting into the feed mechanism and staining the loads.

Im having the same issue. I even purchased a new washer and its still leaving stains!!! has anyone found a solution?

Have you tried washing a load with no detergent or softener just to see what plain water does? If still an issue I would demand full refund.

What I have learned….you can get the stains out…I use dawn+baking soda+peroxide= paste on for several hours…repeat wash and do again til gone. I have also learned to really clean washer, like all inside rings, rubber, door etc. ..everything I could possibly reach. not just the tub.

I am experiencing the exact same thing, its a brand new samsung front load. i have been using the same detergent in our previous washer, but sadly that burnt out, and just cannot seem to understand what the problem is. Alot of clothes have got spoilt already. please share tips, thanks @rveldhoen, will try what you have suggested.

On the Samsung have you tried just running the Pure Cycle for cleaning the unit?

Call LG. I have a set and I wash so much. Never happened. But, if it did something is wrong. It’s not the size of the load.

Just had my front load washing machine repaired. The board went bad and he repaired it - very talented repair guy - others would have replaced it. Anyway, he said no more than 2 tablespoons of detergent in the machine. That most people use too much detergent.

Could this be the cause?

I have a new GE, and I had the same thing happen to my husband's shirt. It is not only LG washers, I use liquid Tide. I wondered if I got detergent directly on the shirt. Might not have started the washer immediately.

Sorry to anyone who is experiencing this problem. My solution is to use a little bit of detergent only. Do not use the recommended amount. I too use liquid but only a tiny amount compared to the recommendation on the bottle. Best of luck to everyone.

For me it is same exact problem! Like in this post first picture with stained t-shirt. I`ve studied a lot, tried many things, even changed washing machine, but problem never gone, ruined clothes! From my observations it`s connected with use of laundry softener or amount of detergent you put in. I noticed that to me these stains smell more like concentrated detergent/softener aroma, then other (not ruined) parts of clothes, so it means that it is concentrated there and not been wash out. But the real prolem still not found, in my opinion some kinde of chemical reaction? Softener is usually silicone based, so before use you could shake bottle, and mix with plenty warm water, and then pour it in washing machine. Need to use both as little as possible

Does your machine not have a despenser that you put the detergent and softener in? Most front loaders I've seen don't have you adding the detergent or softener directly to the drum but have little dispenser drawers where you put them, often marked with the appropriate amount to add. That way the machine can release them at the expected time in its cycle.

I used to use the dispensers on my machine but stopped doing that when a few times what happened was I would get bleach spots on my "colored" items, but I hadn't put bleach in the dispenser.

What I think happened was bleach was somehow still in the system and came out later.

Probably because it's not "flushed" out with water, just released into the drum.

I have now taped them shut and put a small amount of detergent in a cup, add water then throw into the drum. If I'm using bleach, I do the same thing - detergent and bleach in cup, add lots of water to dilute the bleach, then throw into drum.

Haven't had a problem since.

I have had 2 LG sets in two houses and never had this problem. Both were houses with well water. And the amount of clothing being washed doesn’t matter. Call in a repair person. They usually know why these weird things happen.

First you need no more than a tablespoon of HE detergent in a load and a front loader will handle a lot more clothes than a top loader but the amonut of detergent is key. I load my Bosch front load with clothes that are crammed in there and they all come out clean with that small amount od detergent but it has to be the right detergent . I never use fabric softener or bleach I only use Oxyclean with a scoop per load .

Anyone have an answer, this was brand new- washed with liquid detergernt, no fabric soften, no bleach. Brand new Lg washer, techs over jow three times. we purchased new lg appliances to replace our old Lg since it was doing this prior.… I could cry 😭

I hope everyone ran a test load when they received their new washers. Run a cleaning cycle using manufactureres recommended or distilled vinegar, wiping out washer afterward. Follow instructions for frequency of cleaning. Do not overload and if you have large or heavy items, use the deep water setting. Patricia was right on with the detergent recommendation. Additionally, if you notice spots when removing clothes do not put in dryer. As far as spotted items, they make great cleaning rags, smocks for kids painting, chore clothing for everyone else.

besides the OP stating their solution was to use very little detergent and another poster mentioned the issue was their hot water; as anyone else been able to solve this issue? we are experiencing this same issue. I've disassembled the washer to clean it thoroughly and still has these mystery light gray "residue" stains. Sounds like getting a new washer may not solve the issue. I'm going to test washing clothes with no detergent for a while to see if the issue comes back. HELP! TIA

We have a newer hosue 2018 and had samsung front loaders that were bought in 2019. we have lived in this house since 2021 and have had this problem since we moved in. we have tried everything including flushing out our hot water heater and nothing has worked. it only usually happens on my childrens clothes so the only thing i can come up with is its the magnesium level in our dirt? sounds weird i know. Any one else have solutions?

Im having same issues im replacing clothes on weekly basis. since moving into new build oct 21, i am on washer no.4 use non bio liquid, no softener. ran countless drum cleans. had countless engineers and NONE can give explination. i am at my witts end.

Use only cold water. Add white vinegar to the liquid softener drawer before starting the wash load. Also, get water tested. Do not ever put rag, etc.,with oils, grease (like bicycle chain grease), cleaning products, gasoline, Rain-X, in the washer. Run the clean washer cycle. And good luck. Do not dry items with spots after washing. Just treat and try again.

if i have ever splashed cooking oil on myself when cooking, i would always treat before washing. despite washer only being 8wks old, i have used vinegar and bicarb, on drum clean, 3 times, with no luck. in old house, i was terrible for using too much softener but since coming here, i stopped incase it was that. i have tried supermarkets own brands liquid and powder but been using Fairy non bio for months. my mum stays in same village (3-4min drive) and i dont get any problems using Fairy at hers but im constantly dismissed by builders about it being water/pipes. i think i might have to pay myself for further investigations.

Can you call an appliance repair person? Ours is a genius around things that seem wrong with all our appliances. Ask neighbors for a referral to The Guy (or Lady) who knows the mysteries around these annoying modern devices. We had issues with dishwashers…

I have had 4 different engineers and all are saying they have never came across this. i never wash lower than 40 and dont use quick wash.

Had a similar issue with my front loader. Turned out the washer drain hose was inserted too far down the drain, so dirty water was flowing back into the washer.

MY guess way too much detergent front loaders max 2 tblsp HE detergebnt BTW you can load a front loader witha lot more than any top loader I think most NA still do not understand how to use front load washers . I use oxyclean and 1 tblsp of detergent and if cleaning cloths or towels I do a extra rinse .

This happens to me too, I share the washer/dryer with 4 other family members and it only happens to my laundry loads. And when it does it’s always on my NEWEST, FAVORITE items. Does not matter the color… it seems to only matter which clothes I love. My family said I must be doing something wrong so now several times they’ve watched me load my clothes and pour the detergent in (to make sure I'm not over loading or over pouring). I AM NOT. Yet it still happens all the time so we just laugh and call it my curse. By “we laugh” I mean they laugh. I for one kick scream and cry
