This rug is a 5x7 but wondering if maybe I need 6x9? Can anyone give me their input and advice? Thank you!

Try putting two feet of the sofa onto the rug, and two feet of the chair onto the rug. Now see how you feel about the size.

It looks to me like the area could handle the 6x9 size.

Thanks for your reply SJ! The sofa is flush against the wall at the moment. If I pull it on to the rug a little, there will be a space in between the wall and the sofa. I'm not sure if that would look okay...

I was reading about proper rug dimension only after I bought the rug lol, so now i'm not sure if I bought the right size.

In the picture, when taking into consideration my wall nook, I measured the 6x9 in the room and it would go right up to the fireplace/tv stand and extend all the way past the borders of the wall nook and halfway under the recliner and about 1/4 under the end table. As far as the sofa, it would extend a little less than half under the sofa. So, from the side walking in from the hallway, you will see the rug almost halfway under the couch. Again, not sure if this is breaking "designer" laws! lol..yes i'm very new at this :) Dimensions wise, i'm not sure if the larger rug would kind of cross the border lines in the room and look strange or if the smaller size is fine as it is.

Bigger might be better, but it might be ok with the front feet of the furniture on it...hard to tell from your pics...can you try it and post photos.

Thank you for your reply. I can try and pull the rug under a little and take a pic and show you what that looks like, but if I do that it seems to be too short. It kind of throws off the measurements as far as hardwood floor show near the tv. Something just looks off..maybe the smaller size should be evenly centered?

It is clear this is too small (once the feet of the furniture have been placed on the rug). The 7x9 with the rug HALF WAY underneath the sofa and chair is just fine. In fact you will often see only two feet (of a sofa or chair) sitting on an area rug. This is normal.

I would look at the larger size rug. You would centre the rug in the space and THEN place the sofa and chair in their locations. That's the easiest way to get a room put together.
