How should I style this fireplace?

I’m looking for suggestions on how to style this fireplace and the areas around it. It definitely needs a new mantle, but what kind? What, if anything, should I put in the little arch? Should I put sconces on either side?

The house is a 1935 Spanish Colonial Revival cottage. Any and all input is appreciated!

Something like this with a reclaimed wood piece for your mantle and tile-surround would add interest and go with your Spanish cottage. Mirror & plants to top it off.

Are you going mid century? What does the rest of the room look like? What other furniture are you planning on using in this room? Is this a formal living room? What else would you like to do in here?

Hey Mary - yes, it’s our sitting room / formal living room, as we have a family room elsewhere in the house. It’s used mostly for entertaining guests or reading/quiet lounging. Our style is a an eclectic transitional/mid-century.

I really like what you have going so far. I'm not really sure how I'd handle the arch. But for a mantel I would do a live edge or rustic wood in the same color as the bench and door.

We recommend taking everything off the mantle and just setting a piece of art upon the mantle that goes 3/4 of the way up.

I realize this is an old post...but here are some ideas for those looking at this.

By the way, if you ever did anything with this fireplace, it would be nice to see the after picture.

Add a reclaimed wood mantel with some Jazz Sax artwork over it. Add a custom made 3 Fold Nouveau Fireplace Screen to widen the look of the fireplace so the proportions between the fireplace opening and the artwork are better. Then, get yourself an Artemis Ceiling Fan.

If you are still working on the living room, I’d hang an appropriately-sized painting on the chimney breast and place two decorative pieces on one side of the mantel, one piece on the other side. If you have a low chest or wood cabinet which fits to the right of the fireplace, I would try it out there, and maybe a table or a different wood piece on the other side.

If you are going to replace the mantlel and want to stay in the Spanish Colonial revival style I would suggest a rustic wood mantle. I would chose a lighter colored species of wood with lots of gray in it to replicate the feel of a dryer climate. I would leave it quite rustic too. I don't think the fireplace overmantle is wide enough for sconces. It may not be your style but the shallow niche might be a great place for some Spanish/Mexican iconography - not necessarily religious in nature but something that evokes that feeling. Good luck!
