Range hood 101 help

We finally got to the hood part of the kitchen. Cabinets are installed mostly by ourselves. We found a seemingly good contractor, and I was told to get a hood vented through the attic.

I got lost in the amount if info, and I do not know what I actually do need to buy and how far my role should extend considering we are trying to save money.

We bought a used 6 burners wool range. I do not like stains steel anything with a passion, but I need to safe the budget. The hood I want would look like this:

Can I buy a hood insert and let contractor build a structure around it? I saw somebody mentioning safety issue and that grease can accumulate. Would the manufacturers instructions specify the measurements?

Do I also need to separately buy external blower? Is external blower same things as remote blower And lastly do I need to check with local authorities about installing that external blower on the roof of our ranch?

That pictured “hood” is a fire hazard.

You need to maintain correct clearances for combustibles within the prohibited zone, and you also need the correct number of Cubic Feet per Minute of exhaust, and the required Makeup Air System.

What model Wolf range did you buy? The specs for the range will tell you a lot.

You chose a high BTU prosumer style range that has more technical logistical requirements than a consumer grade range. None of this will be a budget choice. The hood pictured, if it were done correctly, would be in the 5-7K range. The MUA system can run from 2-12K, depending on your location and your jurisdiction’s requirements for heated MUA.

Sophie: I'm glad you could discern a hood in that photo; all I see is a shelf. Perhaps there is a collection and filter area above the pot holder (conveniently located for burning oneself).

Anna: Hoods 101 is something we are hopefully going to achieve when Opaone and I discover which of us is supposed to take the next step in FAQ construction. In any case, reviewing hood threads on this forum will likely provide significant insight. There is a lot to know, and if the challenge is more than you want to take on, then searching for a competent designer or contractor (or both) is advised.

As I noted in one of the former threads, a hood is an insert with a presentable exterior. An insert is a hood in which you provide the outer skin (often wood cabinetry). Either can be configured to have an internal blower, or work with an external or in-line blower. Hoods manufactured with presentable exteriors generally have metal exteriors, but not all of them are stainless steel. Copper, brass, and other metallic effects are available, such at this site:
