Island Lighting

Hi. I am struggling with lighting layout over my soon to be installed island. It is 63x63 with a clipped corner. I am attaching a drawing. It is not centered with the window so my thought was three pendants but they will not run down the center of the island because of where it is clipped. There would be approximately 26" on the sink side and 37" in front of the pendants toward the seating. It was suggested that I run two larger pendants diagonally but I don't like that idea.

I like the idea of two larger but since the window won't be centered, I thought three smaller straight across would work best. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Where is your cooktop in the design?

How are you planning the support for the seating overhang?

Lighting has to be part of the whole design. But no way would O do multiple pendants above such a small island. One single pendant.

Thank you for your reply. The slide in range is to the right of the sink (looking at the design photo). The window is right above the sink bowl. I was thinking of one large fixture initially but my concern is my 8' ceiling and what size to get and what style. My husband felt that the ones I looked at would have to hang too low. What would be the recommended height and width? My kitchen is white cabinets, gray island with a marble look quartz counter also white. Stainless appliances. We are having approximately 8 recessed lights being installed also. I'm a horrible visualizer and he's not much help. ha ha ha!

Your choice should be gracile rather than robust. Avoid fixtures that cast funky shadows down on your work surface. In other words, your fixture choice should have multiple light sources, pointing down at your work surface. Beyonf that, the style of the home plays the biggest part in your choice. Something Uber Modern will not work in a 1939 Center hall Colonial.

The island will be placed in the center toward what used to be my separate dining room. I was in love with a chandelier, I will upload a picture of it for input. Thank you for your time!

    THis is 24" wide and 20 - 76" high.

No picture posted. And you need to double check those pinch points to the posts supporting the header. Once that gets trimmed out, you’re losing space.

Also, cabinets shouldn’t go in until after flooring goes in.

I posted a link to the fixture above. Thank you.

We're not seeing the link, would you post again?

The light color and reflectivity are the good things Is the bottom open? Or shaded? Does it have Edison bulbs? That’s a major NO for kitchen task lighting. The black is a bit much too. It needs to feel lighter and less heavy with an 96” ceiling.

The bottom is open. I have another one I love but it is a large pendant therefore only one bulb. You seem to have indicated that you prefer multiple bulbs. Am I correct?

Is the 24" chandelier for the dining area? I like the glass shade, it seems to be better suited for ambiance than task lighting. It looks to be open on the bottom and I'm guessing 3 bulbs?

I was thinking of it for island lighting

In a different, lighter finish, like a polished nickel, with no Edison bulbs, that could work.

is 24" diameter large enough. I can order it in nickel.

I'm not a pro but 24" for a 63" island seems large enough. Sophie?

It’s actually a bit too large. But that’s the trend these days. Classically, you’d want something about 1/3 the width of the object over which it is hung. Or, around 19”-20”. But we are in the middle of a trend towards over scale lighting currently. So no one is going to think it dwarfs the island like they would if it were 36”.

But you also need to be very careful about the height. With the bottom of the fixture needing to be at 66” AFF, that doesn’t leave you much room above for a tall pendant. 20”H means that there is only 10” between the top of the light and the ceiling. Which is too little space.

Your fixture choice needs to be shorter. Something around 15”H x 20”W, with multiple light sources, would be better, but that will be difficult to find. Very often, a semi-flush fixture is a much better choice for 96” ceilings than a pendant.

My other question then is what the heck to do in the dining room. I can worry about that later.

Larkspurproject, do you also agree that I should do nickel? My kitchen is mostly white with a light greige island and dark slate floor. Polished nickel long pull hardware throughout

Given the hardware is polished nickel throughout, I'd go with polished nickel. It will have a cohesive feel. There are TONS of options out there, have you visited different lighting websites or stores? What about a rectangular fixture? Do you like bling?

Thanks for the sizing info Sophie, good to know!

There are six bulbs btw. I love it.

I've been looking but they all seem really heavy. I checked out Littman brands, Troy Lighting, Hudson Valley, Mitzi, Pottery Barn. Any other recommendations of sites to check out? If it were a rectangle, how would I hang it? Vertically or straight across? It kind of gets back to my inability to properly center it, which was my pendant dilemma.

Where are you located? Are you familiar with Lamps Plus? I realize there are many great sites, but I always end up at their website and store.

I just went to the site and fell in love with the link above and its way less expensive than where I was leaning.

Any input would be great! Thank you both so much for your time.

    nevermind too high

lmd, go to the Sale drop down and click on the bottom choice OpenBox. The items are new and never installed but consumer returned for whatever reason. Great prices! Have fun shopping ;) The lighting is critical in the project and should make a statement.
