No, you don’t need earthworms, but you do need drainage. Does the soil stay wet after you water? May I ask what the purpose is of growing plants in a storage tote? Interesting idea. Are you propagating new plants?

It's effectively a terrarium garden. They don't need drainage, it's a closed system. They also don't need worms.

However .... succulents aren't good terrarium subjects. You need things at home in warm, moist soil and air.
