Here's my June blocks......

I wondered if the blues in Jennifer's blocks were solids. I don't think I have any. But Val's blocks seem to have some prints . I might be able to do some, now that most everything has been put back in the basement and I can find what I need. Well, sort of!!

Yes, you can use prints!

The sample blocks are all different, but they are on the subtle side and, yes, one of them is a solid blue. The top left is Kona solid in (I believe) Royal paired with a WOW. The top right is Stargazer by Robert Kaufman paired with a solid white. And the bottom block is a different WOW paired with a blender by RJR called Hexies. Here are close ups of the fabrics:

Found a little chart to answer my question. If the finished HSTs should be 3.5," I will start with squares that are 4 3/8."

Hi Larri!

That chart depicts the square size for making two "no waste" HST's at a time. In other words, it is the minimum size square needed. In theory, using the chart sizes will result in perfectly sized HSTs (assuming you cut, sew, and press accurately).

I usually go a bit bigger with my square size and then trim the HST to the proper size. Of course, this means that I have the extra step of squaring up so it takes longer to make them and I also end up with a bit of wasted fabric.

With respect to the "magic 8" method, the beginning size square is 7 3/4" for "no waste". However, I used 8 1/4" to give myself some cushion.
