For anyone who ordered from SleepEz, if the bed doesn’t fit you softness or firmness wise, you can always exchange your layers for softer or firmer ones. I had to do an exchange for one of our layers and it was not too terrible to do but the results were well worth the effort.

Are you following my thread in Decorating? Lots of pics.. but nothing about bed itself other than the washed velvet fabric sample. I'm having an upholstered bed made for the MBR and DD1's room.

I got mine set up yesterday. Mine is a SleepEZ too. The foundation was fairly easy to assemble. The mattress was too. 2 people are really needed to get the project done in a timely manner. The boxes are heavy too. So that could be a deal breaker for some, as there may be too much DIY in the project.

I have to sleep in it a few times. I took a nap today and was refreshed following. Last night I did note that I felt like I woke up less often. I'll monitor for the next few nights and report. I have a Fitbit that I wear to bed and it monitors sleep. I will be able to compare from weeks and months past to see if there is a change.

I also have to get some sort of bed skirt that I can get on to the foundation without having to move the mattress. I might cut my old skirt apart and just somehow tack it to the foundation.

Any ideas on the bed skirt issue, or another way to cover the foundation that would be easily laundered from time to time?

I have the same issue with the bedskirt. I hate to sew, so thinking about altering my current one makes me hyperventilate. I might just send for one of those that are made for easy removal:

I love the bedskirt concept with velcro! I really love the box pleat. thanks Olychick for sharing that link. I'm thinking I might be able to revise the skirt I have to do that. I have a box pleat matelasse skirt that I'd still like to use.

My bed was nice last night. I don't know if it helped me not wake up though. The whole setup is taller than I had before, so I should have ordered the 5" foundation instead of the 8". Oh well. During the night when I got up, I was surprised that my feet didn't immediately touch the ground. It will take 2 nights to get used to that so I'm not concerned.

Enduring, what firmness combination did you get?

My side is top to bottom, soft, medium, firm, x-firm. All Talalay Latex. DH has med, med, firm, x-firm. I almost wish I had a soft second layer at my hips. I think overall it’s better than my 18 year old spring/latex pillow top mattress. DH can’t really tell the difference. The mattress we got rid of was very good over the years. Sister in law has it now as a spare.

Here is a screenshot of the Flobeds recommendation for me, based on my weight/ height data. I think I’ll call SleepEZ tomorrow and ask if they recommend switching out the bottom layer and send me a medium layer for placing as a third layer, with my bottom layer as a firm. So- soft med med firm.

The idea of this layout is due to the Flobeds format with second layer having been split into 5 segments. If I could cut my own I might try that as an option if switching out a layer isn’t working.

We got the 100% Talalay too, but when we bought ours, the only options were S, M, F. My DH got 2 F and 1 Medium. His firm is pretty hard so it’s difficult to imagine how hard XFirm is. As a forth layer, I’m not sure what it really has to offer support wise either.

If you prefer soft or at least softer, you may want to consider trading the xfirm for another soft or even a medium. I like soft and have two mediums and one soft. Sometimes depending on my needs I have the soft as the top layer and sometimes I use it as a second layer but both are comfortable for me.

One thing I forgot to mention is depending on how you sleep, the center part may spread open a bit, but Brushworks has a fix for it in this thread.

Just saw your 2nd post. That might be a good option too. What you may want to do if he doesn’t mind, is to temporarily switch your firm for a medium with your DH just to try for a couple of nights.

I like that temp fix idea Lukkiirish in your second post. Ill look at @brushworks post. When I put the mattress together I really made sure the center line was well eased into place so there was no tension to pull it apart.

I saw that, but I don't understand how it's supposed to help. I would think that wrapping layers in smooth fabric would make them move more, no?

Lukkiirish, I just visited the post by Brushworks. Did you do this? and how did you do this, just use old sheets to separate the layers or did you buy/sew up casings? As of yet I haven't seen this issue. But I have heard the occasional complaint in online reviews.

The mattress layers will move a bit eventually and cause a split down the middle.

It’s on my radar to do, but it’s just not been a priority. We have a queen sized bed and 6 pieces so I’m not sure. It doesn’t bother us when we sleep, I just don’t like the way it looks. I may just go and pick up a bunch of used singles from the thrift store to wrap them in. It works though because the pillows that Sleepez sent with our mattress have cotton covers on them and they lay perfectly in the cases.

Just want to thank Allison for the Pure Green topper option! I found a soft one in Amazon's warehouse deals to save money, too! I've been on a blow-up bed since Oct and my body was just miserable. I've had it for two days and the pain on waking has decreased significantly! DH had me order a firm one for him, yesterday. When we move back home and have a real bed from SleepEZ, the kids will get the twin toppers.

You're welcome, Alex9179! I ordered 2 for our guest rooms and they arrived yesterday. I will sleep better tonight when DGS sleepover.

Tonight DH and I are going to switch sides. I want him to try my softer side, before I contact SleepEZ, which I haven't done yet. I'm on the fence about the combo I have. DH is happy with his but want to have him sleep on my soft top layer, because sometimes he gets sore shoulders when laying on his side with our old spring style mattress. He hasn't with the latex, yet, but thought I'd have him try the soft top layer. I will take with them about me wanting my hips to sink into the mattress a bit more than they do. I still might consider cutting the second layer into medium and soft components. I'll see what SleepEZ has to recommend.

Update: I slept on my DH side of the bed, and he on mine. I could tell his was firmer than my side. He could tell my side was softer than his. He likes his side better.

I then called SleepEZ and asked about the softness and if I needed to swap out my bottom X-firm layer for a soft and lay it on top, for a soft, soft, medium, firm layout. He suggested that my side should meet my needs and that I am still adjusting. He said he'd like me to try unzipping half the casing around the stacks, to see if the easing of the covering helped me with my hip pain, that I told him about. I tried that and I thought that that helped. So after about a week I zipped it back up, and I haven't noticed any issues really. So maybe he is right that the bed had to ease up a bit, and I had to acclimate as well.

I do wake up in the morning less stiff with more spring in my step. I think the hip pain is more eased. But I do think that the pain is going to be with me regardless. When I lay in the bed I feel comforted. So I don't think I'm going to ask for a swap.

The only thing I'd do differently would be get a 5" base instead of a full 8" base. The bed is a little high with the 13" mattress and 8" base, on top of a standard steel bed frame.

That’s really good news and I’m glad you were able to work it out. You have 90 days so time is on your side a bit too.

I am getting ready to pull the trigger and order a SleepEZ organic mattress (their Labor Day sale has been extended thru tomorrow), and wanted to check in to see how everyone is sleeping before I do?

I've been very happy with my mattress. I was considering exchanging my very firm layer for another soft layer as I describe in my post from 7-26. But I didn't and I'm fine with that. I still think the only thing I'd change is to get the 5" base because the bed is rather tall now. DH likes it too. I have a long ruffled linen skirt that I bought on eBay, waiting to be delivered. It will provide more finish to the room, because it will cover the utilitarian steel frame I have. Another option is get a new bed, but I just got the current headboard cheap, and happy with it. I think the bed skirt will do the trick.

Regarding my aches and pains I mention above, I think some of it is a function of getting older. I do sleep well in the bed and I'm very happy to have it. I used to always give a little giggle when I'd lay down to go to sleep. I noticed that I didn't over the last 5 or so years, now I do again. Its so nice to lay down with a smile on my face :) The bed feels embracing even though I don't sink in.

You don’t know how happy (and relieved) I am to hear you guys have all been very happy with the SleepEz choice. It’s a great bed, I just don’t know why the Latex mattresses aren’t more popular.

I wonder if the price and method of purchase is the main factor. There aren’t many retail stores to try them out, at least in central Iowa

When I mention latex, I hear about the allergy concern. Even from people who don't have a latex allergy. I'm in the process of buying new beds. I wanted latex for the kids but the local place was selling a twin for almost $2000. I needed one right away due to the air mattress deflating so we purchased a foam bed, which all the kids love, and want, as their air mattresses give up the ghost. Latex wasn't even on the store owner's radar until I asked. They were all the way in the back. They're not advertised. People equate latex with allergies or...something else. The store owners don't even think of showing a customer the option.

The toppers we ordered in July have made a HUGE difference. I don't feel like I'm being stabbed in the ribs when I wake up, anymore. We're getting closer to moving into the house we're renovating and I feel that "get-in-bed giggle" welling up inside! I can't wait to love my bed, again.

Oh, yes. I layered two, 1" latex toppers on my old queen size before we upgraded to a Cal. King years and years ago. My guests just loved it.

I ordered the same as Allison recommended, back in July. I got soft and DH got firm, to go on top of the air mattresses we're using until we move in our house. We'll definitely need the custom sides given his insistence on a hard-as-a-rock sleeping surface.

To anyone, please don't make your guests sleep on blow-up beds without a thick topper. They're great after sleeping on the floor, but more painful than a real bed. Give them twins instead of sharing a queen. As long as you have thick toppers.

Will a latex topper help with a mattress with a body impression? The expensive king size (non-latex) mattress we bought less than 3 years ago from Art Van Pure Sleep has a 3/4” depression on my side that developed before the first year we had it was even up. 3/4” is pretty deep and uncomfortable. They won’t replace it under the 20 year warranty until the impression gets to 1.5” deep, so I’m wondering if a topper is the way to go, or if we should cut our losses and order a latex mattress.

(To say I’m peeved is an understatement, especially because my husband weighs over 100# more than me and his side has no depression, the sales person told me there is a known problem with our model year, and that I should put something heavy on the depression before the guy comes to measure! Yet they won’t do anything for us. So this is my PSA to not buy a bed from Art Van if you are in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio or Chicago!)

Bluebell, we have the same issue with indents after three years (but different company). I tried to do a topper, but found that the topper just molded to the shape of the indents. So, you could try a topper, but I have a feeling your indents will telescope thru like ours did. Right now, we have the mattress leaning against the wall and a thick IKEA foam mattress over the boxspring. Gotta love mattress buying in the 21st century.

Bluebell, we had the exact same experience with our Art Van mattress. It was complete and utter junk. I don’t even think it lasted 3 years. At the time, I’d never heard of a latex mattress until I saw a post here about them (I think it may have been Olychicks post actually). I was intrigued, did some research and that’s when I came across Sleep EZ.

I have to agree that the toppers aren’t going to really do much and will be additional funds wasted. Obviously, its not $$ you want to spend....again...but, the beauty of the latex is that you really won’t have to buy another mattress, probably ever. If your needs in firmness change you can always buy a firmer or softer layer which is a lot cheaper to do. Plus it’s risk free, if you don’t like it, there is a 90 day free return policy.

When I told my DH what I wanted to do, he thought I was completely off my rocker. There are no latex mattresses available locally to sample which made it kind of scary, but eventually he said ok. We bought ours in January of 2013 and we sleep as good now as we did when we first got it.

You don’t need a box spring with them either, they work like the mattresses used with slat beds where a box spring isn’t used. That’s what we had/have so we just threw the new latex mattress on that and you can’t tell it’s latex at all (until you lay on it of course ;c)

When I was trying to eek out a couple more years with my old queen-sized mattress, I found that the 2 inches of latex did improve my sleep. The indent was minimized but not completely undetectable. The hump in the middle was more of a bother, IIRC.

I think the manufacturer of my current toppers addresses this and says that 3 inches will perform better if you're trying to keep the failing mattress. This is what I bought for the torture device of an air mattress and it made a HUGE difference. 2 inches is okay. 1 inch won't help. I'll link to one of the selections and you can scroll down for their advice.

Thanks, Lukk. I think I need to go back and read everyone's comments about latex mattresses and figure out how we wish to proceed. They sure seem to work well for several people here.

It is so disappointing when manufacturers and sellers won't stand behind their products. Of course, they would tell you they do, and that I just haven't met the warranty requirements yet. I won't ever shop at AV again. Their store is less than 2 miles away from our house, but I would drive 2 hours to another retailer before I go there again!

I guess my Amazon link was illegal. If you look for Pure Green topper, scroll down to the information section. They recommend how to use the 1, 2, and 3 inch toppers. I bought the 3 inch and am very happy, when sleeping without it resulted in significant body pain. It's the one recommended to rehab a failing mattress.

I am intrigued by this option.

Yeah, I feel the same way, we actually drove over 75 miles to a small rinky dink store in Port Huron to buy our sofa!

During your research, check out the sleepez site as there is information about them there. The process and differences and so on.

Also if you google latex mattresses there is another site where people talk and rate the different sellers and beds. I think it’s in a few of the many latex threads here too.

@nannygoat18, we received our mattress shipment on Saturday and "installed" (for lack of a better term) on Sunday. I have experienced no off-gassing. I am very familiar with off-gassing, because my workplace moved into a newly constructed building in 2011 and I coughed for an entire year.

The mattress layers arrived in three separate boxes and are nearly "vacuum packed" in plastic. One of the three had a "latexy" smell when I opened it, but the rest had no smell at all. The latexy smell dissipated almost immediately and I haven't smelled it on the bed since.

DH, after doing no research whatsoever and telling me to do whatever I wanted, has loved the mattress and slept like a baby since day 1.

I think my body is still adjusting and will give it the full two weeks to make a call. I remember the same thing happening way back when we bought a memory foam mattress - I feared I was developing rheumatoid arthritis and I was much younger then! But it was my bones/spine adjusting to the new mattress. All in all, this is much better than our former innerspring mattress (Jamison Marriott purchased because DH traveled 200+ days per year then and his company put him up in Marriott hotels).

I tried DD's 90 day-old Tempurpedic mattress and the off-gassing smell really bothered me (I have the nose of a dog) however she cannot smell anything. I only could test it for about 15 minutes so I couldn't gauge long-term comfort.
