This cultivar is a hybrid between two mandarins (King x Willowleaf). I don't think hybrid seedlings breed true to the mother tree.

As Denise wrote, hybrid seed generally does not produce true, however hybridism generally does not pertain to citrus. There are many "hybrid" citrus seeds that do produce true, but unfortunately, Encore mandarin is not one of them. Encore does not produce true. Personally, I would never grow a seed tree from a citrus variety that does produce true from seed, as I can buy that variety as a grafted tree and have fruit right away, and not have to wait 5 to 10 years for a citrus seedling to mature. Citrus seed that does not produce true, generally will produce fruit that is inferior to the the mother tree, but every now and then an excellent never seen before variety is produced. Because the Encore mandarin does not come true from seed, why bother to graft it to the mother tree? All seedlings would already be growing on their own roots if left to grow on..

Poncirus, I could well graft a scion of the Encore to one of my many Seville Orange chance seedlings. That would make it better for garden planting.. My grafting success rate is less than 10% though..

I will try to uproot the Encore seedlings and pot them up just for the fun of it. Or maybe this is not the proper time and I should wait until fall? They are about 8-10" tall.

With that part of the garden full of different citrus, I'm not even sure if the seedlings have just their mother's genes or the blooms have been cross pollinated.. I have a navel, a blood orange, a satsuma, a kumquat, a key lime, an ujukitsu lemon and a willowleaf growing really close by and plenty of bees and bumblebees to do the job..

Damn, Nik... just when I think you know everything about everything... grafting a seedling onto another rootstock does NOT change the genetics; it might make it grow faster; but it would still not be the parent.
