working with contractor - dirty and cracked baseboard?

My contractor just finished installing the laminate floor in my place. And I feel that the job was shoddy. Is it normal to see dirty and cracked baseboards? It looks worse than previous old baseboards..

It’s my first time working with a contractor so I am not sure if I should consider this is normal.

Please share some of your experiences!!

These are new? Has the GC FINISHED with the clean-up? Are those baseboards PAINTED or are they "primed" and waiting for paint?

IF this is the FINISHED product of his/her efforts, you have reason to complain. If this is only PART WAY to the finished product, then you will need to wait and see.

The molding around the corners is concerning. Looks like the mitre saw or mitre box was missing from his tool box that day.

The corners are definitely a concern that should be addressed as soon as possible (ie. redo). The level of cleanliness (or lack thereof) could simply be part of the "unfinished" product (ie. primed baseboards but not PAINTED). A primed piece of trim gets dirty QUICKLY and is almost impossible to clean. A painted surface takes a bit more effort to mark up, yet cleans up nicely.

If you wish to find out if these are primed vs. painted, you are welcome to take a damp wash cloth to a smudge and see if it wipes up easily. IF it does, the baseboards have been painted. If it does NOT...then you are looking at PRIMER. And primer means they still need to be painted.

Needs caulk and paint and then should look okay.

First and last photo looks like a blind drunk installed it.

    Second photo looks OK.

Third photo--tough situation going around a bluenosed corner. The angled piece could fit better if the back side was relieved.

Needed a trim carpenter and not a flooring installer for the baseboard work.

Does look as though there is only a primer coat on the base. Primer is meant to grab the top coat so it's going to grab onto dirt, too. After an acceptable redo has been done on those bad cuts, I would scrub it up best I could, caulk the joints, scuff sand and slap another coat of primer on it before applying finish paint.

Did your contract include baseboard work?

Did you hire flooring installers or finish carpenters? Or both? Because the two are not the same person.

You can always expect to need to touch up and paint base molding if floors go in afterwards. You don’t want a plumber doing an electrician’s job, and you don’t want a flooring contractor doing a finish carpenter’s job.

Floor installers are often quite skilled with baseboard installation.

This one wasn't. And even if he was, the job still isn't finished.

Just had hardwood flooring installed. I had the flooring installers attach the baseboards, and then had my own painter paint and caulk them.

Ask your contractor when his team is coming back to finish the installation.

There are several steps that were definitely skipped for whatever reason whether it be lack of experience or laziness but it's not a complete job. With some caulk, paint and some touch up on the floors you can have a world of a difference.

"Floor installers are often quite skilled with baseboard installation."

Disagree. It's the trim guy that handles that job. The last pic is not easy to do, but at least a 'return' was attempted. Some guys would just hack off the end on a 22 or 30 degree angle and leave it up to the painter dudes to make it look pretty.

I'm really surprised to learn that companies that install floors don't always have at least one guy on the team who is reasonably skilled at installing baseboards. Every home has baseboards, after all.

What was included in the flooring contract? Often it is remove & replace baseboard. Caulk and painting by others. This is a detail that is discussed in the estimating stage.

Looks like it’s the rough installation before filling up the nail holes sending and painting
