Jemma, I would probably leave your Evelyn for now. In the future, planting roses in black plastic pots that you can set in a decorative pot makes upsizing pots easier. You can pop a plant out of a 1-2 gal and pop it into a 5 gal or up without any root disruption. For now I would leave yours if that pot has good drainage.

If you just put the plant in, maybe lifting it out would be better Jemma. Somehow a pot of 1-2 gal black pot really does seem to get the plant started well. A gradual upgrade of pot size seems to work best. I would always keep a potted plant in the plastic pot to set it in a decorative pot.

If the roots would have to be much disturbed I would be reluctant to do that heading into Summer.

Jemma, if you are in a hot climate (California) I would not move it now when it is trying to get established. I bet it will get there eventually.

My ALM from RPN is small but healthy. Received a month or two ago....recently repotted into a 2 gallon pot...is growing some new leaves. I will keep her in the pot garden until she fills a 5-gallon, near the front walkway where I can pick the buds off when she tries to go in that direction.

She has been outpaced by Ragged Robin which was originally so small that RPN was reluctant to ship it to me; now RR is 2x the size of ALM and is putting on blooms. LOL not surprised.

I'm very happy with RPN and very pleased to have acquired ALM!

RE: black pots set inside decorative pots: great idea, Sheila! Why have I never thought of that??? There are so many decorative pots that are stupidly designed to be narrower at the neck than the body, which makes it impossible to get the plant out. Nesting a black pot inside would work much much better!

....I will say though that some plants (especially western natives and other drought tolerant plants) really don't do well in plastic pots, they need more oxygen getting to the roots and moisture evaporating from the roots, so for those I always use clay pots. But a plain clay pot could likewise be set inside a more decorative one.

So now I'm going to feel much less picky about my choices of decorative pots! I've always been eliminating about 90+% of them that have the neck even slightly narrower than the body. Now I can go ahead and get those if I like them.

Fish emulsion is a decent fertilizer, it's just low in nutrients (somethingl like 2-4-2, which is low for the money) and expensive for what it delivers. If it is psychologically satisfying for you to use fish, use fish. I can't touch the stuff because of "The Goddesses", my three Toy Fox Terrors who would tear the place up looking for "DINNER"! Plus, we have opossums who would be attracted to the yard to find "dinner". Because I don't want critters and "The Goddesses" tearing up the yard, I don't use anything organic (organic equals FOOD). I do use either Vigoro or Miracle Gro water soluble and I use it half strength, what I call "weakly, weekly". The instructions state a tablespoon per gallon of water every two weeks. I use half tablespoon per gallon every week. It is difficult to burn a plant with a weak feeding and you can always, easily add more, while it's impossible to remove too much. You can also use Osomocote for a similar result. Neither attract dogs or other wildlife.

Haha, you have three queens. I have two brothers that are chipoos with a dash of whippet and only 8 pounds. My boys love the smell but somehow know to leave my plants alone since most of my roses are in pots. I don't have a problem with wildlife either. I'm trying to keep the roses and yard organic and use ebstone too but I read a post on leaving bananas in their rose pot and was interested to know if it works. The post was years ago so not sure anyone would reply.

Yes ma'am, grandmother, mother and grand daughter, all retired brood bitch/show dogs. "Royalty" and THEY know it. They are about the size of your brothers, and being "Terrors", they hunt and police their "Queendom". They rule it and they let all other critters know it. I think if possible, I'd put the banana peels somewhere to compost before using it in pots. Though they may eventually release nutrients, until then, they are going to require nitrogen to digest. Something we frequently forget when we try to compost in place.

I'm fairly new to this forum, but I've been reading and learning a lot from all of you and decided I'm finally brave enough to post. :) I have been doing a lot of research to find the best rose possible for along my garden fence and decided Annie Laurie Mcdowell is the best fit. I am going to need 6, ( It's a long fence)but so far haven't been able to find any in stock anywhere. I plan to wait till fall or winter to plant them since it's too near our hottest weather to put any new roses in now. I am on the waiting list with Rose Petal Nursery, but from what I'm hearing from y'all, ALM sells out really quickly. So I'm wondering if there might be a better way to go about reserving 6 ALM plants for this fall? All the roses I'm growing here presently are doing very well for me, so I feel ready to try this. Any suggestions from those of you who are familiar with this rose?

I think you must have a lot of patience since this rose is hard to find and it will be tiny when you get it. Most rose nurseries only let you buy one if the rose is in high demand. I really would suggest you look for something else otherwise it's going to take you a very long time to get all six. What are you looking for in a rose?

If you can get 6 ALMs you will have performed a miracle. Do get on the Rosepetals list and you have to respond immediately if they become available. You need to grow the babies in pots for a year or two. It really is an art. Better buy 8 so you have spares.

@judijunebugarizonazn8, You can probably contact RPN or another nursery that sells ALM and contract with them to grow 6 or 8 ALMs for you. You'll probably have to pay extra, and wait a year or even two, but at least you'll know you're going to get them.

I've done this with Roses Unlimited and Freedom Gardens (not for ALM but other roses).

You could plant five others and save the best spot for Annie Laurie McDowell when you get her. :) Have a look at Renae too.

Thank you for the welcome! I'm sorry, I'm new at posting here and haven't figured out how to add my location to my profile yet. I will have to work at that. I am in southern Arizona, but high enough elevation to be in zone 8b or Sunset zone 10. Just moved here two and a half years ago from Sacramento California. I've been gardening since a child but was hesitant to try roses in this climate. I'm discovering roses grow as well here as in Sacramento, so I'm happy! I keep collecting them even though every rose I buy is meant to be the last one for a long time. :)
So here's my project: I have a vegetable garden and greenhouse that was becoming a target for the javelina pack that roams our neighborhood. My husband put up a block and metal panel fence around to protect it. Along the side facing the house, I'm putting a long border of climbing roses and perennials and in the center will be a gate with an arbor. I plan to grow Sally Holmes over the arbor. The reason I want ALM for the fence is because I really love pink climbers and I need it to be pretty nearly thornless since I will be walking along the inside of my fence when I'm in my vegetable garden. I know ZD is a great thornless pink climber. I have 2 of them on a trellis along my front sidewalk and they are wonderful. The scent is incredible as well, but after their spring flush is over, they put out precious few blooms the rest of summer and fall. So ALM fits my criteria of a pink climber with few prickles, lots of bloom and a scent to boot! I've considered several others, such as Spirit of Freedom, PIP Eden and Kiss Me Kate ( I have her on another trellis and love her!) but none of those really meet my need for "thornless". If any of you have recommendations, please chip in. I appreciate all your thoughts so far. I like the idea of contacting RPN and asking them to grow half a dozen or more for me.

I've never grown Renae, but I was under the impression that she is more thorny?

I did entertain the idea of growing Brother Cadfael since it's a fairly thornless pink rose. I'm told he can put out some pretty long canes in warm climates and can be trained as a climber. But I didn't know if he was a reliable rebloomer. Maybe there are others in that category that would work?

What about Felix LeClerc, Victorian Memory or Peggy Martin?

@judijunebugarizonazn8 no ma'am, Renae is also completely without prickles. Renae is the seed parent of Annie Laurie McDowell. It is much more pliable and flexible than ALmD. Its flowers are smaller with far fewer petals but still highly scented, like ALmD is. In over twenty-five years, I have only found ONE prickle on ALmD.

Look up Renae on HMF - pink , thornless, repeat bloomer. What's not to like? Mine is 2 years old and still quite small - takes a while to grow, but according to the experts, so does ALM.

I just planted Peggy Martin against a fence down my hill in alkaline clay not really amended and she is already double or even triple the size I bought her as a month ago. Pink, thornless...

I really do want Annie Laurie Mcdowell more than any rose I've checked out yet and I'm willing to wait until they're available. I called both Rose Petal Nursery and Rogue Valley Roses this morning and talked with a live person at both places. Both of them assured me that they are busy propagating lots of ALM but can't really give me a time frame as to when they will be available. However, once they do become available on their website, there is no limit as to how many I can order. Ordering 6 at one time will be no problem they assured me! So that's good news. All I need now is patience.

It took my two five-gallon climbing roses three years to bloom when I planted them. I guess you will have to disbud yours for a while if you want it to grow since it will be a twig when they send it to you. Good luck! Patience and perseverance are virtues after all.

Yes, I realize I am going to need both patience and perseverance with these babies, but I'm ok with that! All good things take time, energy and lots of loving attention. I am one of those gardeners who enjoy the process nearly as much as the results and often choose starting from seeds or cuttings even when other options are available. Just thought I would throw in Raspberry Cream TwirL as another thornless rose for anyone else looking.

I tried several times over to change my username to include my location and zone. No matter what I do, it won't accept my revised username.
Raspberry cream Twirl is beautiful! I think she would be lovely somewhere, but 6 of them would be too much of a good thing for my taste since she's so bright pink.

Renae is an AMAZING rose... It’s the closet thing I can think of to Annie Laurie McDowell. LilyFinch has grown it in both Tennessee and now in California. It should meet all your requirements... and grow much more quickly. Burlington Roses has it in a 1 gallon size.

Mr. Moore planted Renae all around the office area at Sequoia Nursery. It took to the trees and "festooned" its wonderfully scented, gorgeous blooms from the trees all around the picnic lunch area. Renae was the sister of the gentleman who owned the pharmacy in town. She died of cancer in the early 1940's.

I so wish this rose were reliably hardy in zone 6. It probably would have grown leaps and bounds passed to winters.

Would love to see pictures of it =) growing in the trees.
