Damage from the black sand "rain"

Here is a photo of the damage the black sand "rain" from the volcano did to my lemons and a few other citrus.

It was even worse for my small seedling Kaffir trees; I had 20 and now I maybe have 9.

I washed it off as best I could; but the damage was done; that iron is so toxic to small plants, some small animals, and even children. I left most of the damaged fruit to see if it will mature or simply rot. Oddly, the smallest fruit are impacted the most.

Oh, as you say that rain is so toxic to small life forms. I'm thinking of all the loose dogs and cats, birds and other wildlife and feel so sad. Hopefully little kids are protected by their families. But really feel for you and the people and life in the area.

Oddly, the smallest fruit are impacted the most.

Could be because the young fruit don't have as thick a rind yet and the acid in the fruit and peel is more readily available to react with the iron compounds on the fruit surface.

I a sorry this happened to you. What ill you do with the damaged fruit? Juice?

Interesting John. Could I ask you a question? At the top of your post it says that this was posted in Citrus and in Porches and Decks. Did you choose to post in both or did some software algorithm decide to add Porches and Decks? I can't imagine what volcano damaged citrus has to do with a porch or a deck.

And that's exactly why I asked. There seems to be some kind of AI that is deciding to cross post messages in different forums. In my opinion it has ruined some of them. I used to like the Landscape Design forum, there are some professionals that spend time there and offer great advice and insights. But with the new look almost everything in LD is cross posted in Design Dilemma which seems to be full of people with little knowledge but lots of opinions, mostly wrong ones that don't conform to any principles of design. Questions that used to generate informed discussion now rapidly devolve into meaningless talking points. It's almost not worth going there anymore.

You have to check when you post now cause it seems to have a mind of its own on where to post things now. I mentioned in a post about using paint buckets as cheap temporary planters and it tried to post it to the paint forum in addition to the forum i was posting it to. I unchecked it and now always look to see where the checks are that i did not check off.

Pea - that's good to know. Apparently they have (or had) some stupid algorithm that is scanning for "key words" and/or the source of where photos were uploaded (and/or name of photo), and then is trying to guess where else to cross-post. Sigh. I think in John's case, his fruit photo is showing up as having been assigned a name of "house-design.jpg" and is stored at a houzz ("st.hzcdn.com") domain/location.
