Too bad you didn't post beforehand. What was his reasoning?

I grow all of mine in the ground, but the girls next door grow some of my Sun Golds in pots. They do fine. I remove suckers for about the first 12" and then let the rest go.

Btw, Sun Gold is indeterminate and will grow up to 10 feet tall. It needs good support.

Your plant will survive, buy it doesn't need to be topped! Just leave it alone and let it grow :).

The important piece of information that you neglected to supply is HOW BIG are your containers. If your container is too small, and the plant is too big, one can argue that the plant will be stressed and produce poorly. Cherry tomatoes are a poor choice for containers because they need to get HUGE before they flower. In any case, topping the plant won't ruin it. The question is whether you really needed to top it.

Not sure where you are, but if you're in the south, and your cherry tomatoes are only 3-feet tall, something is wrong. If you're way up north, they just haven't matured.

At what point on the plant did you top it? How far from the soil line? Can we see a photo?

If at 3 feet they didn't have any flowers, you probably have a severe lack of sun.

Or too much nitrogen. Or sometimes cherries can be slow to bloom if conditions haven't been good.

Would be nice to have some additional info from the OP, some feedback. Otherwise we are all just preaching to the choir.

Are these the Sungold F1's? http://www.johnnyseeds.com/vegetables/tomatoes/cherry-tomatoes/sun-gold-f1-tomato-seed-770.html If so, they are "Indeterminite". And thus topping your vines should not have 'ruined' them.

What may have happened is they could have become quite stressed, or used up the nutrients in the potting mix and would have 'naturally' stalled out. What is

1. the size of your containers
2. the type of potting mix (ie: brand, or formula) you use
3. How much sun they get
4. What you fertilized them with, and how frequently
5. A picture :)

My guess is they're hungry, or so stressed they aren't going to recover. But I topped an indeterminate vine this year by accident and it sent out four suckers to replace it.
