Solution for our engineering hardwood floor from Applachian

Our house has a slab concrete floor. We have a dual bifold glass door in our old master bed room. Since the floor is not even, the contractor does not level it that area when installing the Engineering wood-Now the edge keep lifting when we walk on it. Now the contractor is telling he can not install the wood threshold-if he does, we would not be able to open the bifold door. Do you think we can adjust the bifold mirror higher or replace the door? Please anyone who are expert in engineering hardwood floor can help us to find a better solution. Thank you

Hmmmmm, a flooring PROFESSIONAL who thought a floating hardwood floor would be "click and go". Oh dear. This person is NOT a flooring installer. A PROFESSIONAL flooring installer (not a General Contractor) would know that 99% of "floating hardwood" floors are NOT click-together.

And living in the same neighborhood does not mean he would "know" the concrete wasn't level. Did you PAY for concrete leveling??? If you did, now MUCH did you pay?

And are there any OTHER areas where the floor bounces? If there are, you have a floor that was improperly installed....because part of proper installation technique INCLUDES a FLAT AND LEVEL subfloor.

And why was the mirror left IN PLACE??? If this is a $200K renovation, why would a contractor leave a mirror door in place?

I'm going to tell you the cheapest solution: remove the mirrors, reinstall the hardwood PROPERLY (with leveling) and then reinstall the doors or BUY NEW ONES that fit or can be trimmed to fit the space.

I have a feeling there are other issues with this renovation....but I don't know if you want to open that can of worms.

If the slab is not level this will be hard to remedy. Maybe they can carefully trim some material off the bottom of the transition? Did the contractor mention the slab was not level prior to installation.

SJ McCarthy the renovation is for addition for our new kitchen- That areas are leveled -the transition in the hallway-where the old and new kitchen is being minimized as much as we could have done without touching the existing structure. That ugly mirror was in the old existing room- we can live with low level squeeky but not when the floor is popping up in that area. I think we are going to replace it with a different door.

So my spidy senses are accurate. Wow...just finished reading about the issues with the Contractor (who isn't the General Contractor) and about the subs who are paid directly by the homeowner and W the subcontractor (who may or may not work for the contractor) who is getting rather peevish about the final work W has to do...

Zoinks! The floors are the LEAST of your worries.

Actually the game of 'piggy in the middle' which you are forced to play between W and B is NOT typical. That's why we are VERY vocal about what is going on.

If you have found a hardwood flooring professional to deal with the hardwoods, good for you. It will cost more but I'm going to guess it is worth it at this point in time.

The rest of the build and the backyard grading is between W and B. You shouldn't have to deal with it.

I understand your frustration. I would caution you on HOW you post your reviews. The courts in the USA and Canada have shown they will punish people posting extreme reviews. Most people get into trouble when they start using words like "playing our life, games" or "charging us like water".

You are welcome to DESCRIBE the WORK that was done or not done. The courts have no problem allowing DESCRIPTIVE reviews. But using words that would be considered a personal attack falls into the "no-no" category. The Supreme Courts of USA/Canada have all had their say and both courts are telling on-line reviews "No you CANNOT make personal statements that defame the person."

Just be VERY aware of how you do this. You are allowed to do it....so long as you do it PROPERLY. And that means communication on-line must be CLEAR and concise and PRECISE. No name calling. And you will want the grammar to be fairly clean.

I'm glad you could find your way to freedom. I wanted to point out the SAFE way of creating a review. Your right to post a review is maintained...but there are safe ways to do it and unsafe ways to do it (unsafe meaning a massive lawsuit against you). Canada's laws are tougher on "freedom of speech" than the USA's. It is much easier to sue someone in Canada over libelous or slanderous statements. I understand the USA has a different view and has different laws. I base my statements on Canadian law which means it is better to be safe than sorry (re: slander/libel).

I hope you are able to find a resolution to all the problems you have had with this company. I'm sure a well worded, precise, negative review (free of any libelous or personal statements) will go a long way in ensuring no one else needs to go through what you have gone through.
