did you change it out? that looks kind of 70's.. remember getting my head stuck in something like that once or twice as a kid :)

You can remove the spindles and you might have to add a top cap either painted or a stained feather to conceal where the spindles joined the staircase. But it can be done.

I am thinking of removing the spindles and the hand rail, and running the wrought iron "track" along the top of that white tread piece, with iron spindles and iron hand rail. Just wondering how the track will look on the white tread, if it's possible to faux that white to look like wood or if it will be ruined and need to be replaced once the spindles come out.

Spacing between rails is 3 1/2". Check with your local permit dept. on this spacing. This is a residential code, and typical.

Andy I am leaning towards an iron handrail and posts, does your company quote for replacing the tread if I get a new wood piece for that part, and patching up the drywall where the wood handrail was attached? The choices are to keep the white tread piece (hope I'm using the right term - I am talking about the part that the balusters go down into) and faux finish the white tread, or take it off and put a new walnut colored tread that the iron person could put their 'track' on top of .. make sense? I'm in OC..
