Catalpa. In the evening, the flowers can be wonderfully fragrant. I usually see these get very large with a single trunk. I can't tell if it's a southern or northern Catalpa. They are both very similar.

A beauty. A real keeper. A fast grower. You may get some die back over the winters on branches, but don't worry because it's just part of the fast growing plan. It's not a long lived tree, but who cares she's so beautiful. I usually try to keep a baby around for the sake of replacement, but many people don't have this problem because for them it throws a lot of seeds and makes babies at the base. Yes, Mary, you're perfectly correct. It is because it is so pretty that I have kept it. I had not expected to have a tree in that spot, but it is very attractive, and the birds love it so much. So I'm rather quite pleased it decided to come and live in my yard :)
