Miss everyone here :)

Just trying a quick post, Since everything has changed. For those of you I have stuff to send. Just wanted to say I'm just a tiny bit broke ATM, some Bill's were higher than usual..and a fixed income sucks. I do promise, they will be sent as soon as funds allow. I've been doing lots of work outside in the meantime and that has took up a lot of time. But I've been very much enjoying it. I miss the forum, for the way it use to be and the people that are upset and are leaving..

I hope they resolve their issues soon! And those that left return. A picture to cheer up anyone that sees it, and hopefully it will post :)

Hi, Alana. Thank you for the asiatic lily! Like you, I hope the Houzz bumps smooth out and members return. I checked out other gardening sites, but what has been created here is truly unique. We're such a vibrant rosarian niche in the cracks of all this technology.

Did you know that you are triple posted and one posting forum is Appliances? Ha, ha. Now you and Jeri have even more in common besides old roses. Maybe all these misdirected Antique Roses Forum posts are seducing newcomers out of their laundry rooms and kitchens and into their gardens. :-)

A great thread, Alana. I'm thrilled you're still hanging in here! I wonder who else will check in with you.

It's so nice to see you're still here, Krista. Yay! Carol

That's beautiful.I don't like this site very much anymore either, but i keep coming back to see old friends and see what they are growing. Here's a picture of my favorite lily.

Sorry for the double post of this one, trying again.

I didnt know I posted in the appliance forum Carol! Haha, maybe your right and they will come on over here and fall in love with some old roses. I'm glad your still here!

Thank you so much Krista! I'm glad your still here as well.

I love your lily's kathi, thanks for sharing them :)

I had posted another photo too, but for some reason only one showed up.

Oh and I meant to say Carol, I totally agree with you! I checked out the forums that people were going to, and it just wasn't here. I guess is the best way to put it. I'm not a person who really likes change, but I did try and I just missed here. I know this place is not perfect, or maybe it hasn't upset me enough yet to call it quits, but I just love it here, the people, like a extended family or something. And your right, its unique, and it's a part of me.

    Hang on in there...

..sparkling lilies... I have some just coming out too.. daylilies that is...

I was worried you wouldn't get any replies Alana... so I'm happy to make up the numbers...

Carol, I agree, it's not the same at the other forum. Nothing wrong with it, they seem a nice bunch, but it's not home!

Titan , you read my mind. I never went back there although it was nice to see Chris ( Aqua eyes) trying to explain btw Antique, old and modern roses. I know he brought another one but I can't remember . Boy, if he is in debate team , he will win . He is walking encyclopedia for roses. I only spend a few hours one night but miss this place horribly. What is the Beauty ? It is all you guys.

Anyways, it is so nice to hear from you. I am sorry you are having ups and downs. But hang in there and the dice will change. It can't stay like that forever.

Houzz, send me email yesterday then another one today. I hope they will fix our issues although I have not tried anything yet.

Well, I am definitely sticking around here... HOME.

Good to hear from you :)

Lovely lilies, Alana and kathi. I think they go well with roses.

I keep trying with the other forum, but I'm always drawn back here, even though it's not the same with so many of our friends gone. Trish, I'm glad you're still posting here too. I do hope they fix all the problems (still waiting for mine to be fixed) and that we can entice everyone back here. Sometimes change is good and sometimes it ain't. I never imagined that what has happened here would make me so depressed.

Alana and Kathi, very nice Lilies. Ha, I still have zero companion plants. My cosmos is soooooooonnnn tiny.

I could not tell which is weeds and which is cosmos. I love Google and found seedlings to match.

    So, pulling weeds again :)

I’m sticking around :). Don’t feel like moving, I like all the peeps here, hopefully they will work out the kinks for us. The other site is okay I guess but just has a different feel. Modern rose pic, but the only new pic I have from this year!

Good Lord Julie that's amazing. I need to remember this Rose. I don't think I'm moving either. I read the posts over there and may join still I am sad that so many people seem to have gone there permanently especially Virginia as she left a while ago. I really do like it here. It feels like home. Plus I really like how the pictures show here, although the database and photo linking is nice on the other site. The Reddit site is also nice for antique roses, but I don't really have much to contribute unfortunately yet and haven't seen much activity there. Plus, I don't really want to use a third party site for posting pictures. So you guys are stuck with me!

I had five or six lilies along Tea Rose Row and the rabbits have in large part eaten every single one. I ordered some alstroemeria and lavender to take the place of my lost irises. I hate how the garden looks now but putting in some new plants that the rabbits hopefully won't fancy should help.

Alana, I can't remember whether you grow Russelliana. If not, you might try it someday. The deep pink blooms (below) transform to the loveliest mauve-pink hues and then gradually turn that shade of violet-mauve which makes our hearts sing. There are even blush to pale pink faded blooms in the mix. Paul Barden grows a big plant in his garden, and it reminded me how much I'm looking forward to seeing something approaching his in my own garden. I can't decide whether to grow it with pink or apricot. Decisions, decisions,.... Oh, did I mention the wonderful fragrance? My nose can't stop visiting these froths of petals. If mine grows a bit before fall, I could send cuttings. As I recall, it's pretty easy to root. Maybe I could try layering a piece this summer....

Russelliana would look fantastic mixed with your Ghislaine de Feligonde or Marianne...or Mel's Heritage? I'll have to check your HMF rose list again to see what you're growing. I've lost track! Someday, I need to create a rose list and post photos on HMF. The days are just packed, aren't they? And every penny is a tight one. If it weren't for kind rose friends, my garden would be an emptier place. :-) Carol

Ingrid, the alstroemeria and sea lavender will be lovely! I used to grow both, but at some point they surrendered and departed for the Big Garden in the Sky. Carol

I had alstroemeria for a few years, and loved them, and the rabbits did leave them alone. I thought they were supposed to be hard to kill, but I managed!

Carol, your Russelliana is a lovely thing, and I am very envious that you've visited Paul Barden's garden!

Goodness! So many post to read! That makes my heart sing! So glad for everyone that is still here, and a couple of you put it just so right! This is home! I didnt care for the third party picture thing either. And though I could use the other site, it just wasn't here, it wasn't home. I do miss Virginia, and a few others who left permanently, and I'll go and say hi, ever so often, but here is where I'm staying. Didnt Jon leave as well? I think I read that he left too :(

Vaporvac your first picture looks the same as mine:)

Carol I got russelliana as russels cottage rose from RU. It just went in the ground this spring. It is doing wonderful! I have GDF and (hopefully) Marianne, as long as it's not mislabeled:) I dont have Mels Heritage, but have saw such beautiful pictures and heard such great things about it. I have Paul transon and father hugo, nearish:) I hope it blends well and looks great. They are all young do we shall see. I also have Maggie near the vicinity, but she is not doing that great. Not sure why. Hopefully she will start picking up soon. ..

Hi Alana - I went over to the "new" place out of curiosity...and it's OK and I'll probably check it out now and then....but it isn't here. I'm resigned to whatever the current powers that be do (or don't do) to this forum. One thing we can be sure of is that it will continue to change and evolve as it has for the 20 years I've been coming here (Yikes - 20!!!) It's the people that make it special, and although the people do come and go, it seems to continue to attract the same type of person - my kind of people: passionate lovers of old roses. All of you are what make this forum the best. Thank you for being here!

Anne, you wrote such a lovely post; it very much echoes my feelings. Yes, people inevitably do come and go, and it's great to have new people join because that keeps this forum fresh and vital, and inevitably there are life changes that cause people to leave, but fortunately there are not too many leaving at one time, and they are still missed and remembered. I'm sure the people at the other forum are nice, and they've been very welcoming, but the format with the separate areas for rose pictures and landscape pictures just seems less intimate and user-friendly. There's a disconnect, although I may be the only one who feels it, I really don't know. For the time being I'll be in both places because so many friends are there now, but it's not what I would wish.

Yes, I really have missed Virginia. I was just thrilled to hear from her, over there. I actually haven’t been back there in a few days..... It’s nice, but I’d rather stay, if they fixed the bugs here. I must say, they are working on it. They replied to my email in 28 minutes. This wasn’t the automated email, but someone actually looking into my issues and asking me for further information. I’m feeling hopeful! I REALLY am loath to leave all you dear people.

Gorgeousness all over that Russelliana, Carol! I’m sure it will be lovely with either pink or apricot, but you know me. When in doubt, I’ve always gone with pink, but I’m trying to break that habit. I want to branch out into other colors more. Those deep purpley roses really excite me, but every time I find one I think I MUST have, I find out that it needs a winter chill:( So far, I haven’t found that “just right”, antique, remontant, deep purple rose that will do well here. Oh, and it’s not allowed to become an enormous monster, either. Only one giant monster rose allowed here, and his name is Mel’s Heritage. (He can be kept to a much smaller size without complaint, though. So don’t let that scare ANYONE away from Mel’s Heritage ((INGRID:)) It’s my “bestest most favoristed” rose, ever!

Alana, nice you have both Marianne and Ghislaine de Feligonde! They both look amazing. I was just admiring Marlorena’s GdF, the other day. What a great looking rose. Marianne is quite the catch! Lucky you. Lisa

    Shelia-haha!

Ingrid and Anne I think you both said it well. Everyone has, and its exactly how I feel as well.

Thanks Lisa! You know I dont believe either Russelliana or Erring de Brod, I know that's spelt wrong, but will correct it in a minute..BUT MY POINT, I dont believe either of them need winter chill, so grow them :) They are beautiful Rose's! EDB may need it, I must look this up, I'm not Christopher, do I forget things, lol

Erinnerung de brod and dont think they require chill.

I have both Russelliana and Erinnerung and they do great here as does Cardinal de Richeleiu. They are once bloomers though. Munstead Wood, Ebb Tide, Falstaff, and Prospero are also great in the repeat bloom department. I have more dark red/purple once bloomers but I can understand repeat blooming is relatively more important when your rose season is longer. In Alaska, almost everything was a once (Spring) bloomer because the season was 3 months total for frost free days.

Alana8aSC thanked Sheila z8a Rogue Valley OR
  • 8 years ago

EnB blooms reliably for me without chill, and it lasts for over two months, usually April and May, I feel. But it is one of the huge ones. As I type this, I'm realizing I don't know what counts as chill for roses, though. In my climate, I have enough chill hours for some apples. It gets below 40f in winter but not 30.

I’m not sure what qualifies as “chill” either. I remember Kim(Roseseek) explaining very well a while back. Unfortunately, I don’t remember what thread it was on. If you have enough “chill” rbehs, maybe I do too. ( I feel like we’re talking about having “Karma” and “Chill” in such a funny way. Sounds funny, anyway:) I might get frost a few mornings in the winter, rarely though. It occasionally dips down to freezing for a few hours before dawn, maybe 5-10 times per winter. It’s only for an hour or two, though. I think my Sunset Zone is 23. Lisa

Lisa, Mel's Heritage is never far from my mind, but I must admit that the deadheading issue worries me a little. Not to mention that I don't really have a place for it, but that' s such a minor consideration!

I just received 'Eyes for You' from Burling. and will plant it tonight (it's hot right now!) Well, maybe not, I just realized I don't have any more metal cages and it probably wouldn't survive the night without one.

    last modified: 8 years ago

Ingrid, I am VERY excited about your Eyes For You acquisition! The Hulthemia hybrids are both incredibly beautiful and absolutely fascinating. A real breakthrough in new roses. Carol

Thank you Carol, that is exactly what I felt about this rose. My husband went out and got the wiring to make a cage without my even asking him to do so. I'm hoping that this rose will be tough enough for my conditions, although it will be planted where it is in afternoon shade and of course will get plenty of water. Still, it's the wrong time of the year to plant anything, so I know I'm taking a chance. I'll keep you informed and let you know when it (hopefully) blooms.

I'm also fascinated by this Rose and have wondered if given its background would do well in such a harsh climate as yours. Can't wait to hear how it does.

Vapor thanks - it’s a once bloomer for the most part, but it’s one of my only cane hardy roses. Titian I grew up in Iowa :). Avatar is from our first dog, stray guy that really did look like a dingo dog. Hope you all stick around!!
