Appliance Question - refrigerator

Can anyone tell me what refrigerator brand has the skinniest door thickness? The door itself with handle. No integrated or built in will work due to their height requirement. Doesn’t have to be counter depth. I need a refrigerator where the doors are nearly flush with the walls.

Not sure waht you are asking the doors will need to sit out from the wall to allow opening and a counter depth one will be the best choice IMO. Mayb if you post a pic of the space we could understand a bit more.

check the Fisher Paykel ones as well, they make some that are completely flush on the front. I had one in my 20's bungalow that had a postage stamp for a kitchen when I couldn't afford a true counter depth. Having no handles sticking out into the space really helped a lot.

The area where the fridge will sit is an area under my steps, so the height won’t accommodate a built-in. I have the depth for a full sized refrigerator. I also have the width. Where I’m running into trouble is the area where the doors protrude into the walkway in front of the fridge. I already bought a GE Cafe series fridge, but the doors are so thick they protrude too far into my walkway. If I’m going to bite the bullet and buy another fridge, I want to get one with the thinnest doors possible, and I was hoping someone would know. Maybe someone in the business or someone who had the same problem and already addressed this issue. I have looked on line, trying to see specs, but it’s hard to see exactly how wide the door itself is. I did see the Fisher Paykel, which is probably the most viable option I’ve seen, but can’t find one anywhere that I can actually look at - mistake I made when I ordered the GE - I didn’t actually see it first. If I had I wouldn’t have bought it. And I also heard that Fisher Paykel was bought by a Chinese company a few years ago, so that makes me nervous, too.

GE is owned by that same Chinese company, Haier, FWIW.

Thanks for that info, Writersblock, I did not know that.

Most refrigerator doors are thick due to insulation. Perhaps this is not the best spot for your refrigerator.

The doors on Fisher Paykel are likely the thinnest you will find. Not sure exactly what you mean by "flush with the walls". Any pics or further description would be helpful.

I don't get it , but that's fine. Buy the counterdepth fridge that you like and move it back and forth till you get the look that you want. I love my KD counter depth, easier to locate stuff.

The opening in my can it’s is W 36”x H68.25”. Is there a mid range brand with the appropriate size? How much room should I have around it?

Have you searched AJMadison's website? They have excellent filter tools that allow you to specify all the dimensions.

Dumb correction. I meant cabinet opening is 36 wide x 68.25 High. I’m having trouble finding a refrigerator to fit.

Thank you Wiscokid, I did check out AjMadison, but will look again and check out the filter tools.

Jani, there are two critical clearances. One concerns the gap between the fridge sides and any enclosing panels and the clearance from the top to any overhead cabinet. This relates to air circulation to prevent the fridge from over heating. It varies according to each manufacturer but is usually in the range of 1/2" to an 1". The other critical consideration is the clearance need so the door(s) can open fully if there is a wall close to the fridge. Again this varies for each manufacturer. Their installation instructions will tell you the requirements.

Just one consideration as far as the air flow clearance between the top of the fridge and the cabinet above. The fridge height you stated is 68.25", if the air gap is 1" then you could have the upper cabinet bottom at 69.25". Before doing that please consider that if the fridge needs to be replaced other models of that width may be higher and as such they wont' fit. For regular free standing fridges I always set the upper at 72", if the fridge is lower than this then we use a horizontal filler to close it in. That way if a new slightly higher replacement fridge is needed then the filler is removed and the new fridge will slide in just fine.

Jani, that could be a problem for a 36" width fridge, most are closer to 70", especially when the top hinge mount is taken into consideration.

There are styles with no handles. My Samsung will have no handles, but the bigger problem is probably your height clearance. Here are a couple narrower ones that aren’t too tall, but you still need some ventilation space. Being narrower, maybe the extra space on the sides would vent it okay. These are 33” wide I think.

    This is for that Samsung.
