Since it is just starting bloom now, it is likely a type 3, hard prune, but you may need to wait until next year to be sure until next season for bloom timing since it is newly planted. Both types 2 and 3 benefit from a prune down to several buds before the second season growth starts since it will create a more robust plant.

NHBabs, many thanks. That's good to know about type 2 in their first season, just in case. Only last year I got a courage to grow one type 2 clem (Elsa Spath) because I never fully understand the pruning instructions in the books about this type. 'Will Goodwin' would have been another one, but it will have to wait for the next year. Meanwhile I'll keep an eye on this unexpected beauty.

I don’t know about 5b, but in my area, I don’t bother pruning my type 2’s at all since the winter usually prunes them down to the snow line. I just clip off dead vines in spring and that’s all. You can prune type 2’s along wih type 3’s and it will just delay the blooming some. If they are double, many will bloom singly instead, but since I like the singles better, that is fine for me.

Yes, we love it. The neighbors asked me where I bought such a nice trellis :-) It 's all along the fence and also under the back deck. It also saved us $$. A great idea!

Looks like Westterplatte

I don’t grow Westerplatte, but according to Clematis on the Web it has red anthers which Vesfl’s plant doesn’t appear to have.

Looks like Niobe to me

Where did you order it? Via online, right? It's quite likely that's one of the cultivars they were selling then and they still may have the same plant in stock and some photos at their website. If so you may well be able to match and ID it correctly.

It's an excellent mail-order nursery but mix-ups happen sometimes to all. I looked at their other clematis photos and all that were mentioned here look very similar to the one I have. NHBabs is right about the anthers though, which unfortunately rules out 'Westerplatte' as the anthers on mine are yellow.

It may well be 'Niobe' as buyorsell888 suggested. Also crossed my mind when I saw it at a local nursery yesterday, where they had one 'Will Goodwin' which I bought after all. The flower size on mine is smaller than usually described for 'Niobe' but it could be because it's a young plant.

There are only two other clematis that I've seen on their website, 'Voluceau' and 'Warsaw Nike', that look similar to mine but I've never seen them in reality to be able to compare...
