The holes in the leaves could be sawfly larvae, which are like very tiny little green worms. They are always on the back side of the foliage. Squish with fingers. Wear garden glove if squishing barefingered bothers you. Not much you can do beyond that except wait for predators arrive to control them.

The chewed bud looks more like katydid damage. If you go out about an hour after sunset with a flashlight you can sometimes see them. They love to chew off half the rosebud. I go out early in the morning with scissors and at that time they are very slow and easy to decapitate with a pair of scissors.

Rose garden long enough and you end up with a strong stomach, ha ha!

Thanks, hoovb! I did some image googling and found rose buds similarly damaged; rose budworms were blamed. Have you had rose budworm damage on your roses? How does it compare to katydid damage?

I've had earwigs do the bud damage too. Then there are always the June Bugs; which reminds me that I'd better do a check today for those buggers.

I've had a few June bugs for the first time ever this year. Don't know what that means; obviously something has changed.
