Hancock Fabrics via Michael's Craft Stores

I happened upon Michaels.com today, and saw they are selling the fabric left over from Hancock's bankruptcy closure. You can only purchase online; however, it is free shipping after $29 in yardage is bought.

Just FYI, as it was new-to-me. I miss my Hancock Fabrics store.

Yes, you definitely have to check the fabric content. The Riley Blake caught my attention, and I didn't look much further. Hancock Fabrics was my go-to store when it was here. The quality did seem to go downhill as they moved closer to bankruptcy. They were akin to a JoAnn's, if you're familiar with those.

I don't think this is left over fabric. There were two Hancock's stores fairly close to me and they sold to the walls in the "going out of business sale". There was nothing left you would want to buy a month before they actually closed.

For those who are not familiar, Hancock's was a fabric company based in Mississippi (I think it was MS, but it was the south for sure). About 40 years ago, it was an outlet type fabric store. You could find some buys, but you had to dig through a lot to find it.

When I took up quilting, they didn't seem so much like an outlet store anymore. They carried fabric, hobby merchandise and small decorating items. Their fabric was mid-priced. Most were private label goods with few brand names. I would say they were comparable to what Joann's was a few years ago. (I think JoAnn's quality has improved in some areas lately.)

So, basically, I'm guessing Michael's bought the name, not inventory.

I went to their site. I love Riley Blake for I spy fabric. I find it's good quality. I never heard of the other brands. However, I never heard of some of the brands at my local quilt shop, either.

The $4.00 per yard solids are 100% cotton They also have 100% cotton 108" for $8.00 per yard.

    That's all I looked at.

If you specifically google Hancock Fabrics of Paducah, they have an very extensive selection. The pack and ship right from the warehouse in Paducah, KY and if you have the opportunity to visit, it is quite an impressive store. I have never had any problems with any fabrics I have purchased there and they have great closeout sales online. Especially batiks!

Hancocks of Paducah and Hancock Fabric are not the same. Hancock Fabric was a multi-state chain that sold mid-line/outlet fabrics and later incorporated home goods (At one time, there were probably 10 stores in Dallas). They sold all kinds of fabric.

As I understand it, Hancock of Paducah is a high quality, single location quilt shop located in Kentucky.

You can't compare the stores, they are/were totally different and have no association with each other.

Now that Michael's has bought the Hancock's name, who knows what it will be.

My comment was just an fyi. I've never shopped at the Hancock chain.

I'm sorry Char if I sounded snarky. My experiences at Hancocks fabrics were never great. There was a great deal of time between going to their junky outlet store and then, years later, shopping at their stores in nice shopping centers. My experiences were not as nice as Larri's. I sometimes shop at Hobby Lobby and at JoAnns, so I'm not a fabric "snob". I just thought they were overpriced for the quality of the fabric they had.

I've only bought something from Hancocks of Paducah once. They have a good reputation, though.

I just didn't want anyone to think the two companies were the same. In my opinion, that would be an insult to Hancocks of Paducah.

Hancocks of Paducah is fabulous! I've only been there once while on vacation.

Isn't it interesting how chains differ regionally? I loved shopping my Hancock Fabric store. It was my go-to. While Hobby Lobby is a favorite of many, it is my least favorite right now...but, it is the first chain store I shop b/c my son is an employee & I can use his discount. :) My preference is to shop my local quilt stores, though my budget doesn't always allow for that.

Hancocks of Paducah is on my bucket list! I'm hoping to travel in the spring & visit my hometown in the Midwest. I'm seriously planning a leg of the trip with a stop at in KY for fabric shopping.

Soooooooo, I ordered some flannel and I'm happy with it. I can tell the difference between the $3 and $4 but it's slight. All in all, not bad!
