The major issue with what i think you are proposing is how will drawers or cabinets open if you drop a small waterfall type edge. Have you designed the island cabinetry yet?

Yes, the cabinetry is installed, and my understanding is that normally a board is installed to sit under the countertop so that the edge does not drop down to block the drawers. But I was also told that the edge usually extends beyond the top of the cabinetry, by about an inch or so, and I don't want it to do that because I don't want it sticking out that much.

I agree with Joseph. I have a mitered edge and only 1/4" overhang.

@lisadlu16 - What is the thickness of your countertop and the measurements of the mitered edge? And is your countertop sitting on top of a board so it's elevated and the edge doesn't block any drawers or doors? (The doors to my cabinets are very high). Just trying to figure out how this would work.

Yes, there is buildup (is what it is called) to raise the countertops so that the 4 cm (2cm top + 2cm laminated edge) is all above or sitting on top of the cabinets and not hanging over the front of the cabinets. The typical overhang is 1 1/4". This is to ensure that the drawers would not get dripped on if anything was on the edge of the countertop. Do you have a inset door style? If you have this style of cabinet you could go with less overhang.

Thanks for that explanation, Melissa. The fog has lifted... I don't have inset door styles, and while I realize the typical overhang is traditionally around an inch to limit dripping on the doors, I very much like the streamlined look of a narrow overhang. It seems to be gaining in popularity as impractical as it may be!
