OK I moved this beast to another window and now Im finding that because of the way I set it up - the top and side vents are partially inside where I am wanting to cool the air!

Is it going to work that way? Arent those vents supposed to vent strictly outside? What are they for anyway ?

Ughhh Im going to have to figure out a way to support this monster because its going to be hanging out the window. Ridiculous.

Im not liking this AC. It seems if I have it on fan only theres warm air blowing out of it (even on cool evenings - I want to bring the cool air in)

The vent/grills on the outside part are for pulling air in over the fan motor and compressor and blowing it out through the condenser (outside) coil to dissipate heat. Air conditioners work by absorbing heat into the refrigerant (Freon) from inside the house and dissipating it to the outside ... basically moving heat from inside the house to outside. That's why hot air blows outside. Obviously you don't want to be pulling cool inside air through and blowing it outside.

I don't think that is what he means. He wants it to operate in a 'vent' mode where outside air can be brought in at night. I haven't see one that can do this for quite a while.

Its the Frigidaire FFRA0811R1 from Home Depot. I think I have a way to rebuild my support so that the AC is sticking out the window more. Luckily there is a porch roof below where the support can sit on.

Yeah - there s the fan mode and the cool mode, so I thought the fan would simply pull air in from outside but maybe that's not what it does?

The fan does not pull from the outside, only the inside. It doesn't exhaust this air, it just recirculates it.

You probably are aware of this, but it bears repeating.

These window units are designed such that 3/4 to 7/8 of the unit sits outside the window. They come with sliding brackets on each side that attach to rails both on the top and bottom. The bottom rail usually fits in the 'trough' that the bottom of the window sash fits in. The window sash itself fits behind the top rail. The sliding brackets are slid into the left and right sides of the window.

If the unit is not too heavy, the weight of the unit trying to flip out is held by the window sash. (The 5kBTU window unit I have has never required any additional bracing to hold it in the window.)

Is ok to cover TOP vent of a window A/C (Whirlpool Energy Star 15,000 BTU) to stop pigeon droppings from entering?
