Lots of people use the smaller rugs exactly for the reasons you give. But magazines rarely photograph rooms like that: big rugs are showier.

Your BED is covering the flooring is it not? Buy a vacuum that fits under and have a broadloom cut and bound to an appropriate size. Even a stick vacuum will work under a bed!. If you get BUNNIES you are not cleaning frequently enough. A collection of small rugs shrinks the room......: ) And is just as "hard" to dust and clean clean

I grew up with HW floors. Each bed in our house had a throw rug to step out onto. Makes no sense to put in wood and then still have to vacuum.

I am 100% with you. I personally loath dust and so I do not have a rug under my bed. I have designed large rugs in a bedroom for clients based on preferences. Truth is, small rugs on a hardwood floor in a bedroom are timeless. In fact, big stuffed down comforters are going away with bedspreads and the winter blanket making a come back. So the small rug look is a perfect accompaniment. They do not need to match (more interesting if they don't) but they do need to feel like a family. If you did three rugs: one on both sides of the bed can match with a third at the end different but must work with the two in color and texture/pattern. Or all three can be different. Or you can have one as shown below. They need not all be the same size in width or length either. Enjoy and have fun!

I use small 3 x 5 rugs with both my King beds! Looks great and serves the purpose!
