Sink size question

New cabinets are 28.5x22.5 inside, it was originally made for a drop in sink. I’d like to get an undermount single bowl if I can. Any suggestions on dimensions that will work with that cabinet size? Brand suggestions would also be helpful. -thanks

A 24" wide sink is bigger than necessary for a kitchen, imo. The giant 36" single bowls kds spec are really only so they don't have to redesign the cabinet layout from the old standard double that requires a 30 or 36" cabinet. The front to back measurement can depend on how wide you want your counter. Your cab can be spaced/blocked out from the wall to allow a 28 or 30" deep counter. More usable for all functions if your design allows it. An 18" front to back, so 24 x 18", fits everything you normally wash in a kitchen. Figure in space for the faucet hole. And any dimension your backsplash needs. You may need to go less than 18". I like small but not zero radius undermount sinks with an offset drain toward the rear. 9" deep is the max for me because of the space for a disposal and the height of the drain pipe if it goes in the wall. 24" is woefully inadequate when you're hand washing even typical everyday pots and pans -- you'll have to wash one side, then turn the item around to wash the other side. If you haven't yet ordered your cabinets yet, order a larger sink base ... if you have already ordered, talk to your installer about the possibility of cutting down the cabinets to place a larger sink across two cabinets ... I've seen it done to install a Kohler Stages in two 24" cabinets instead of one 48" cabinet.

That may be your opinion, but it doesn't in any way match reality. And the OP can easily verify actual needs with a box cut to the dimensions. Try out your 12" frypan and 11 x 18 cookie sheet. No matter the sink size they have to be flipped to wash the back. Remember the sink is also 9" or so deep. Plus millions for years have managed to hand wash pans in the 15" x 15" sink that makes up one side of a double. 24 x 18 x 9 is a mammoth space comparatively. For twice a year jobs use your utility sink to soak anything larger. You wouldn't tie up the kitchen sink for those jobs anyway.

It's a matter of priorities. Counter space for prep, etc. is more valuable to me than a 3 or 4' hole.

    HU:

If the outside dimension of your cabinet is 30", you can undermount a 30" sink as long as you strap it in place with a Hercules Universal Sink Harness or a Sink Strap. You may disregard the sink manufacturer's cabinet size requirements and their awful mounting clips.
