What color barstools?

Kitchen cabinets are ivory and island is dark sage. I need new barstools and thinking of navy upholstery for the stools. The dining room has navy walls and can be seen from the kitchen, while the family room has dark brown leather sofas and dark charcoal/tan striped chairs. The island cabinetry with the navy fabric sample is below. Thoughts on the combination?

I would not select navy. Color also depends on what style bar stool you have selected.

Yes, exactly but with pewter nails and foot bar.

I don't think navy works at all. It's too similar to the island and too dark. I would go with the suggested woven barstool, or with a light cream/tan.

Also, there are 4 griege chairs at the end of the island (pic below) so I'm nervous about having too much neutral and the fabrics on the stools would not match exactly.

To help people help you, here is a link to the bar stool at Ballard and all of the fabrics that it can be done in - https://www.ballarddesigns.com/marcello-barstool/439368

There are probably over 200 fabric choices. Read all of the reviews; the most recent is 2 years old, and one says - "these barstools are huge.

    Truly
disappointed with the size of these stools. I have an large open
kitchen/ sunroom with 12 ft marble island and separate bar area. They
not only overwhelm the space, but are difficult to get into. My husband
is 5' 11 and I am 5' 6. We look ridiculous sitting in them. We saw them
counter height height on line. Pintrest, Houzz etc. They always got
great reviews. Be aware of ordering the bar height! Very expensive
    mistake."

Based on your first photo the navy does nothing for your island or countertops. I think the navy stools will overpower the space and become the focal point.

I would get some samples from Ballard and try to find a neutral that complements the counters and your chairs.

Have you tried a local store that specializes in bar stools ? They may allow you to take one home so you can check it out in person. The navy does not work well with you Island color.

Just FYI - the chairs at the breakfast table are not pink but a griege color.

agree w/sophie. the solid navy is a no. and if it's these,

then they are far too bulky. imagine looking at the backs of those against that island.these are similar in size. look how much room they use. this is a large island but putting in a third chair would be way too crowded. if you only want two, then ok.

I like sophies fabric choice on a smaller type of counter stool/chair. I also like these

you get the texture, the neutral and you can have some pattern/color.

your dining chairs will be very close to the bar, so you don't want something completely different. sorry, but those bulky Ballard navy chairs next to those dining chairs are just way too much bulk.

sage w/a less bulky chair in a neutral.

or maybe something like this w/more of a blue/green

please post a pic that shows the room in it's entirely so we get an idea of what's next to what. describing it to us does nothing. "The dining room has navy walls and can be seen from the kitchen". Ok,,,lets see this navy wall. just because you have navy across the room, doesn't mean you need it next to a green island.

    The island is 9' long.

    last modified: 8 years ago

.It's not 9' of useable space due to the large legs on the ends. measure the space where the chairs will actually go. now measure the width of the chairs you want. tape them off on the floor.

how much bigger are they then your current chairs? that should tell you. you have three chairs there currently. those are a perfect size for that space. if the new ones are wider, how do you propose to get into them if you have 3 crammed there in that space?

these are similar in size. look how much room they use. this is a large island but putting in a third chair would be way too crowded. if you only want two, then ok.

Beth, where can the blue & white chairs you posted be purchased? I like the style.

I think the homeowner or a house resident, doesn't want to sit on a tuffett, like little Miss Muffet as someone wrote somewhere..? It is darn hard to find seating that works for folks that are larger than Heidi Kleiss or Taylor Swift, that are of a decent price and with upholstery that is desirable. 3 feet is ample seating area for most folks. I think 3 will be fine. Typically in a small group like this, they can make it work. It's that 24 inches per person that makes the elbow space, zip, and unworkable, with those great "17 inch Wide/17 inch Deep seats! :) Probably get some upholstery fabric in that nice rust tone, golden brown, or perhaps a version of a coral/peach/salmon? ?family of hues, if not the same as your island tone is.... since the stools don't swivel and a professional will be able to make them beautiful. A dark sage may be best, because visually they will be one unit, while the coral/peach/salmon depending on what you find available, would make them look visually lighter in that area(and I always did think salmon/navy and sage was very pretty combo rarely used) Don't laugh at this... I could have shared the paisley in the same color tone family here. Gosh! I hope this link works! https://www.kovifabrics.com/search/product_detail/610    Well, I knew you would want to see this anyways...https://www.kovifabrics.com/search/product_detail/590     and It has a variable with that is much lighter with an overall warm hue to it also......https://www.kovifabrics.com/search/product_detail/589......but the first fabric link does speak of being quality enough for commercial upholstery use..

I like the blue, patterned stool that Beth posted above. Some other options might be to have ivory stools with upholstered seats.

IMO your existing bar stools do a better job of contrasting the island and making the lovely space more interesting.

I don't view the greige chairs appropriate for a kitchen. People get oil, sauce, ice cream etc. on their hands and having an upholstered chairs seems like a mismatch for this space.

I think I would have selected a wood chair with an upholstered seat to complement your unique table & then found Queen Anne barstools for the island.

Or I would have chalk painted Queen Anne chairs in Dark Sage Green for the table. Not this green but the one that matches your island.

Have you had a breakfast bar before? I would NEVER want arms on my stools. Makes it all the harder to get into. I would caution you on the navy. They are soooo color specific I think you will tire of them quickly, but then I would not care for the island its current color.

I think you are probably right about having arms on the stools. I can switch which stools I buy but just can't decide on the color.

I really like the navy! I'm a big fan of tones of the same color in the same room. I do agree that upholstery can be iffy in the kitchen - but other materials besides a woven seat are too uncomfortable.

I have attached a pic of how the dining room with navy walls can be seen from the kitchen/family room area. The brown leather chair on the right in family room will be replaced with a dark charcoal with tan thin stripes fabric. Thanks for all the suggestions!

What about a bold pattern with some yellow/orange/coral? That will provide a nice contrast to both the Navy and your island. If you sprinkle yellow accents throughout the kitchen and dining room, it'll tie the two spaces together.

The better choice for the island might be a navy that matches the DR walls. The green is nice, but it’s a little bit Landed From Mars.

As are those upholstered breakfast chairs. Griege can have different color casts, and those are definitely pink. Like travertine has pink tones. Like a lot of grays or beiges have pink tones. They have pink tones. And they need to be reupholstered. Or moved elsewhere. They’re to poofy for a breakfast table.

I would not get rid of the leather. It grounds the room.

Sophie, the navy from the 1st photo (up against the island) matches the DR walls, so you think that could work on the barstools? The leather chair is leaving the family room but will still have leather sofa and loveseat with chairs that are dark charcoal with tan thin stripes (rug in that room has lots of black and cream/gold).

No, navy for the island, not the stools. Navy stools against a green island do not work at all. Instead of the green island, paint it the DR navy.

Unless you cross pollinate that green into the rest of the rooms in a major way, it’s far too lonely. As in, change the navy DR to the green that matches the island, and use the green for some window treatments and pillows in the family area.

You can combine navy and green, but the white is too dominant to make that happen here. It would need to be minimized by changing it over to a color.

I would LOVE to paint the island navy but husband is against it. We have only been in the house 2 years so he's not ready to change it. He also doesn't want new stools although we really need them but has resigned himself to the fact that we are getting new stools anyway.

Gotta love husbands that have ideas about interior colors, only if they are cornered for an answer typically..... consider most can't really SEE the colors the way others do either? LOL You could probably paint the island when he is out of town for a few days? and he would not notice it with the new stools in front of it? Just a thought...LOL....

Trust me, I have thought about it! I'm hoping when the new upholstered charcoal recliners arrive in a couple weeks that he'll then see how painting the island is a good idea . . . fingers crossed!
