Blackberry propagation

last modified: 8 years ago

Hi all

I have a few Black Satin blackberry bushes with primocanes that are growing 4-6 ft in length. I want to propagate more plants using both tip layering and simple layering.

I'd like to utilize half the canes for layering. I need to tip prune some canes a few inches now to induce lateral branching. I'm not sure about the appropriate time to start layering. Some info I've read said wait until fruiting is finished by late summer. So, should I tip prune all the primocanes now to obtain lateral growth and then start layering these laterals in August? Is early July not a good time to start layering a few canes?

I'm not clear on the best procedure, method and timing.

Thanks for any help and advice you can provide.
