My lighting store recommended (and I followed their advice & now agree) positioning them over the edge of the counter. Farther out will cast a shadow between you and the items you are working on, farther in limits the amount of light that reaches into the aisles or lower cabinets. Also, find out the diameter of the light cast by your chosen lights and plan the spacing accordingly (different sizes and brands will vary in this -- you can get the info on the manufacturer's website). The store also said to place the lights so that an open door (fridge or cabinet) won't cast a shadow into the interior of the cabinet/fridge.

Agree with Ohio above....you do not want the cans to be behind you while you’re standing at your counter. They will cast shadows that makes it very annoying to work there. So, whatever the measurement is that puts the can in front of you with no shadows cast on your workspace is best.

Thanks! So would you have them center the can at 25” then? The counter edge will be at 25.5” I believe.

I believe we’re using 6” flush cans.

Mine are centered at 25".

We had a great electrician when we renovated our kitchen a few years ago. He also suggested symetrical placement where recessed lights were placed close to cabinets. We went with his suggestion. Several years later, do I look up and notice the placement? No, because the room is small enough that I would have to strain my neck to see it. Do I regret it? No, but I wonder if I would have noticed and minded light shining or reflecting asymetrically on the cabinet doors...
