lindalana..thanks..my husband has drilled holes in pots for me but these had a removable perforated tray in the bottom and I thought I would try it..a failure so far..these 2 are my only pots without drainage holes..will probably drill into them someday..

Very nice! Regal Splendor and Krossa Regal are among my favorites. Happy you rescued KR from its soggy pot, it is going to be so grateful. Both of these get huge, it is a good thing you have plenty of space!

peren..my plan is to plant the other Krossa in the ground..drill the turquoise pots..empty the black pots into the turquoise..drill holes into the black pots..then figure out what to plant in them..

Karin..I love my new pots!..after seeing pics of yours I was determined to buy some turquoise!..I want to fill them with EEs next year..I've enjoyed growing EEs in a pot..they feel so big!..it's easier to plant them..then also dig them up for the winter..easier to water..if the winter was milder here I would have more hostas in pots..too cold here to leave nice pots out..my Regal Splendor will spend the winter in my shed..your Regal Splendor is tall!..they're so elegant aren't they?..I would want to keep it near too..so one EE is not enough lol..you're not the only crazy one :-) ..looking forward to seeing your pics..

i has purchased probably 10 years go some teal pots on clearance and I never really liked them until this summer. I put them inside my Hosta bed and they just pop.

for the longest time I thought only white is the color to go.

last year I added some blue colored pots (clay, frost save) which where super cheap at Lowe’s. The best prices are after Labor Day. I got a &58 pot for maybe - little more than $10

Claudia..Karin (and others here) add potted plants in and around hostas and it looks great..a colorful pot is fun in my yard..I have shade and it's 99 percent green lol..these pots came from Lowe's..they were marked down a little and I used a "spend $50 save $10 coupon" so the total (tax incl) was $44..not terrible for 3 large pots..if they go really cheap someday and my timing is good I might get more..since I'm crazy..I used to buy browns and grays..still like that but now I have just about every color..most of my favorite hostas are the more available ones..the special ones scare me lol..

Arrrgh :-) I have like 4 of those coupons from my Astilbe shopping trips :-) I asked hubby if I can go use the coupon on a birth bath but he kept me in check. We did order from Hallson a few hostas. I spent the first time $25 on one Hosta whoohooo.

It's my third year with regal Splendor and I had a look at the old pictures :-) It changed a lot...

Hello Ann thank you. What do you like Lowe’s for? I like to go here because one of the locations close by they do not take care of their plants. I have been able to get there I would say 15 limelight,10 strawberry hydrangea, 2 Nikko Blue and 5 Annabelle’s for $1 - $5 each. Which was an amazing deal for my fixer upper who has had nothing but a laceleaf when we bought it. Home Depot never marks plants down.

Claudia..I love Lowe's for the same reason!..I've found amazing deals there..my neighbor loves it too..we tell each other if we see deals..I have 2 stores within 10 minutes - different directions..one fall I got this arbor (unopened in the package) for $40..was $249? originally - forget exactly but more than 200..

Nicholsworth 55, I love your Regal Splendor in a pot! I love seeing those legs too! Turquoise pots are grand. They make a nice statement.

I also like your tall black pots. You could just find a pot to fit into it instead of drilling holes on the bottom of it.

The Diamond Lake hosta looks really nice Claudia!

My own Regal Splendor is in a spin out bag. I plan to put it in the raised bed my husband is going to build in a few weeks. The spot it is in now has drainage problems so my RS has only been increasing in size very slowly.

Diamond Lake looks good, at least on those pictures. It would be interesting to see if some of the forum members have it and how it grows for them, but it seems to be brand new. So you might only get small plants and it will be a long wait until you see if it's worth the money. You already have so many nice big clumps, you can wait and buy special ones :-)

We have a big problem with the weather this summer and the hosta are very small and sunburned. If you water too much (which most of us are not able to do) the potted hosta start to rot and a lot of friends are complaining about losses of up to 5o hosta. It seems to be something like Southern Blight or fungi and is going round in the scene. I had some myself (around 10) and will stop buying until it is clear what happens here.

your EEs are great and I love those turquoise pots I see standing beside Regal Splendor. So many seeds! Despite the heat and drought the fruit trees here are full, but everything falls down before it is ripe :-( We have nothing compared to Lowe's, I would like to make some 'Schnäppchen', too!

We had a few rainshowers yesterday, so at least I do not need to water the next two days. But the pots are drying so quickly, maybe I should really buy a kids pools and water them this way.

newhostalady..I agree that Regal Splendor looks wonderful in a pot..like a hosta bouquet..I hope your new raised bed is the perfect home for your Regal Splendor..I've bought quite a few pots the last 2 years..kept seeing pots I liked for a decent price and couldn't say no..I've never tried a pot in a pot method..that's a possibility..

Karin..these seeds are AWFUL..13 years here and this is the largest quantity ever..they have pointy ends that can stab you..and they're skinny and fall into the tiniest cracks..I saw an Abiqua Drinking Gourd leaf that I bet had about a hundred seeds!..I've wasted so much time raking, sweeping and picking them off of everything..sorry that you can't go to Lowe's but you have quite a collection of pots, plants, garden accessories etc from the stores you have :-) wouldn't it be fun to go to garden centers all over the world?..glad to hear that you had some rain..

Regal Splendor looks great in a pot. I have it in the back row since its a nice tall upright and don't get to be near it very often. I already had Diamond Lake on my want list but figured it would be a few years due to price/availability.

steve..I agree with you that Regal Splendor is a great choice for a pot..I had 2 Undulata Albomarginatas in these very same brown pots..they overwintered in my shed and were just fine the next spring but I wished they were taller..I put them back in the ground..

Nicholsworth55---I wanted to move the Regal Splendor (in the spin out bag) to move it to another part of the garden. But when I put it in the new spot, I realized that it just didn't look right because it was taller than most other hosta in that bed! I am considering putting it in the raised bed because I need to move all the plants where the raised beds will be. But I will seriously consider planting RS in a pot and putting something else in the raised bed just because RS looks so nice potted up.

I love bargains too. It is so satisfying finding something for the garden that is reduced in price. This year I purchased two 84 inch simple garden hooks for half price. Very satisfying!

When I use my tall, plastic garden pots, I usually put rocks on the bottom of the pot to stabilize it. Once in a while I empty the water that has collected at the bottom of it.

newhostalady..my husband's always saying "why do you need to move everything?..can't you decide where it goes and leave it there?"..well no..plants just sometimes need to move..I see hostas in pots on Gardenweb and they look nice..I wanted some..Regal Slendor will look great in a raised bed or a pot!..when I get a bargain it makes my day!..and when I see it later I love knowing what a good deal it was..I'm 99% convinced that my husband should drill drainage holes in those black pots..I'm a believer in drainage holes..those black pots are heavy..made of dense recycled material..we put them in a wagon to move them..they're heavy enough without retaining water..another benefit to drainage holes - soil will be drier and lighter..

update..look at the water in these pots!..I watered the Krossas on planting day and not since..rained very little since then..these pots have never been dry!..I won't plant in these until hubby drills drainage holes..my Krossas will be happier planted outside..

Since those black pots are heavy, I agree that they could use drainage holes. Have you put planting media in the whole pot all the way to the bottom?

Your husband doesn't sound like he is that much into gardening. It can be confusing to others to see and hear all that we do in the garden. Well, I have totally confused my husband in regards to the garden! He says he is afraid to do almost anything there (except the grass)!

Some rules in my garden:

(1) Don't prune anything unless you are disinfecting your tools!

(2) Don't buy any old bagged soil! I am very particular!

(3) Don't dig in THAT area because once upon a time there was a virused plant there.

(4) Don't add any compost to the soil (usually free leaf compost from city) unless you let me know. I may have some seedlings growing here or there that you may cover!

(5) Make sure the hostas in the garden have additional water given them after watering with the sprinkler. There are just too many bare spots under my beautiful hostas! Remember they love water!

and I think there are more, but I just can't think of them now!

I have another rule NHL - Don't spray any weed-killer anywhere in my beds!

I have a pulmonaria Majeste, planted last year, that was just starting to look like something... and suddenly it is brown and curling up. I explained my rule and he says he doesn't spray over there, but I have my doubts (he helps me so much in the garden though that I can't get too mad).

Here's another: Don't put mulch up around the crown of the plants... they don't need to be wearing turtleneck sweaters!

newhostalady..my husband wouldn't know all of our plants so he's not into gardening like some guys here on Gardenweb..but he is a workhorse in the garden!..does stonework, the heavy digging, raking, chipping debris, prunes the big limbs, mowing..when he complains about moving plants it's because he's doing the heavy work..we've moved shrubs that were at least 8 ft tall..quite a few of them and all of them have lived!!..made me smile to hear you say your husband is "afraid"..so's mine..those pots are full of just soil..on a gardening show they said putting anything else at the bottom of the pot is not recommended..the soil wants to hold the water where the media changes..they did an experiment with a clear plastic cup..seemed true..

windymess..I don't use weedkiller..we don't have a nice lawn and I've learned to accept weeds lol..I agree that some people use too much mulch..I hate mulch piled around trees..

Windymess, thank you for the additional "rules!" Our spouses have to put up with a lot! Your poor Majeste! Maybe the wind happened to blow the weed killer onto your pulmonaria and your husband is innocent?

My "list" of rule seems to be growing! LOL My husband does also help a lot around the garden, and that makes me so happy.

Your husband (nicholsworth55) has done a lot of heavy work. Wow! He deserves a medal (or something nice)! Moving 8 foot tall shrubs successfully must have been rewarding.

Your tall black pot stays too wet (I think) because there is too much media and depth to the pot. You could probably fill it with media that has more drainage properties (more bark---I have read one can even plant hosta in all bark), pea gravel etc.---considering the depth of it---that is, if you don't want to make some drainage holes in the pot. But with the crazy weather we have nowadays, we could get a downpour and your pot would be filled with water.

newhostalady..we ARE lucky to have helpful husbands..not everyone does..I think drilling holes is the best solution for my tall pots..still deciding what to plant in them and where they'll go when winter comes..using pots in cold climates takes some planning..

my husband drilled the pots..when I rinsed them out it was great to see the water running out of the bottom..the soil was a soggy, smelly mess..I would NOT recommend "drain trays"..they should be called "water trapping trays"..

You now have drainage holes---that's wonderful! Hope to see a photo of what you decided to plant in them.

And, yes, we are lucky to have helpful and knowledgable husbands!
