Help! Kitchen Backsplash and Floor

Hello...We have been wanting to do a backsplash and different flooring in our kitchen / lower level. We have big dogs so floor needs to hold up. We have cherry wood cabinets and wood trim throughout house with dark quartz counters. We like the look of the ceramic wood tiles but cannot seem to decide. We are not opposed to wood but the dogs tear through the house and are hesitant for that fact hence the tile with wood look. We cannot decide on styles or colors for the floor or backsplash. We will paint walls in kitchen to go with whatever backsplash/flooring combo. What does everyone think would go well with our base.

thanks for any help and suggestions.

What are the colors in the floor? I think I see gray but also see a yellowish tinge - is that the lighting? I would look at changing the lightbulbs to a whiter/cooler white and consider changing the yellow paint on the walls. Then go from there and figure out different backsplash possibilities. I’m thinking a simple subway tile but not sure the color.

Not enough information. Lots of questions:

--Need more photos of the entire kitchen and any spaces it opens to.

--What color are the countertops? They look greenish gray on my monitor.

--What material is your current flooring? If it's ceramic tile, then leave it and consider replacing dcountertops since the current floor color works.

I used ceramic tile that looks like wood planks in my kitchen. Everyone thinks its wood! There's a huge selection of colors and styles. So it's really up to what your color/style is. If your existing floor is ceramic I would leave it and splurge on a nice back splash. With your existing cabinets, counter and floor you can really use your favorite color palate or a design, and paint to complement it.

Wait to choose backsplash after flooring & lighting installed.

Bring 3 favorite samples home. Post pictures of daytime & nightime of all 3 to help us help you.

the current flooring is just vinyl with tile look. the countertops are pepper black tans and browns. the lighting definitely gives things a yellow tinge that is made worse with the yellow paint.

Agree with Beth, It's diffcult to give an objective opinion with the current yellow in the room.

Please change the light bulbs before choosing any colors. Currently the yellow hue in the bulbs is turning the true colors a yellowish hint.

I color selected the tone to in your photos to show just how much the yellow is changing the true color that is seen.

Prime the walls white now will help in correcting the yellows, too.

Then please repost pictures of floor samples in daytime & nightime with better lighting, so we can help better.

Beth has it--no gray. Do paint the walls a warm, creamy white with no yellow tones first since the flooring is such an investment.

As also suggested, creamy subway tiles would pick up the cream flecks in your countertop. Match the paint to cream tiles.

Pick up the warm brown tones from your countertop and cabinets in your flooring. Here's one that complements your countertop and cabinets and is light enough to balance out the dark cabinets and dining set.

For backsplash i think Jeffrey court royal cream subway tile would look really nice with your cabinets and countertops, thats what im going to install and its a beautiful cream color, not yellow or pinky beige and for walls maybe SW muslin

out of the three, in the last picture, the browner ones furthest back work the best. the middle short ones, no. the foreground planks, way too blue gray. you need something with warmer, browner tones.

(if you have plans on painting your cabinets, then either one will work (not the middle ones though. they are too distressed looking)

Way to go Scott! Your choice of light hue is so much better. Good improvement.

Here are 2 of the samples chosen in this kitchen.

The other ones (in the middle) not good & not worth showing.

A quick sketch to show the color.

Ignore the tiles not lining up. Just wanted to show the color tones with the cabinets.

The warmer tone balances the red in the cabinets. The better choice, imo.

The light cooler grey tones accents the red in the cabinets. There's too much contrast, imo.

Lisa and I appreciate your feedback and suggestions....got some white paint to cover up some yellow so we can go from there. more to come on that. we saw that exact same jeffery court royal cream subway tile at home depot today and thought it was nice.

we do like the browner tile vs the grey as well...we also like the montana chestnut...wish we had some samples...we will get to work on some paint to cover the yellow. thanks again

do we remove the existing backsplash that matches the counter or leave it?? not sure if we should go all way down to counter with new backsplash or keep what is already there and go up....thoughts?

If doing a new tile backsplash, you can remove the granite piece & tile all the way down to the countertop. Seal where it meets well.

scott, remove it. score it in the joint and use a pry bar (use a towel or something so you don't put a hole through the drywall above it) and gently pry it from the wall. you may peel off the paper. New tile goes down to the granite countertop.

and Scott, if you want sample of that Montana Chesnut, just go on tilebar and order 5 samples for $5.

    https://tilebar.com/montana-chestnut-8x45-porcelain-tile.html

they'll send it out to you immediately. look at some of the other wood look floor tiles, or larger porcelain floor tiles, while you're there.

they also have it in the cherry color

Look at this one too. 30x30 and they're on sale. nice neutral warm tone to match your cabs and countertop.

i think the bright white is too stark w/your red cabinets and the darker countertop. you need more of a vanilla. tilebar had the lancaster

and the bianco (those two I posted in my first comment). did you happen to get any of those?

they also have the Santa Monica in Ivory, in a 4x12. this is the shade you want

    Lowes, Olean cream subway

creamy vanilla. look at the cabinet color in this pic. see how much better it looks in the creamy shades?

as soon as you get rid of the bright yellow, it will help you choose something. you could even paint the wall a creamy off white to give you an idea.

Home depot has these. can you see if you can grab a few? (if not at the store, they'll have them online) . I like the longer, handmade look of this tile.

    Catalina, Vanilla, 3x12.

two of the flooring choices w/the vanilla tile and new hardware

then I'd think about doing the walls in some of these shades

Please tape some white paper up then put tiles up & repost samples. Hard to see the samples true colors against the yellow.

I agree with Beth ' s last post.

At 1st glance this 1 is the best of the choices in color so far, but it's truly hard to tell by that photo. Not sure about the high shine on the tile.

would like to see with night lighting, too.

not sure about the byzantine, 3D tiles w/your kitchen. it's a bit more modern looking

if you want a little texture, these aren't bad.

in a white and a taupe color

this Loft Smokey Taupe in a polished glass is a bit more modern.

here is some more samples after we painted the wall. we were unable to find the tiles recommended at home depot/ lowes but will order online. we do have chestnut tile and a few others that were recommended from tile bar.

wow. what a difference! now those white tiles don't look too bright against the wall. maybe the middle ones. the dirty looking cream ones, I don't like at all. and the floor tiles,,,the ones in the upper right. the white/gray are too gray, the left uppers are too beige and too short. you want longer tiles. lets wait for the tilebar samples.

what do you think about some new hardware?

i might consider painting the window trim if you do a white tile.

So glad you changed the yellow background to white!

    It changed my mind, too.

    Good job;)

so we are waiting on more samples to come in the mail. anyways, we also want to get barstools. can you guys recommend something? we will eventually get new appliances and really like the black stainless steal but it probably will be to dark, so we might just do stainless steal. also, want to change our current lighting fixtures. any suggestions?

    thanks for everyone's help
