Go with what you love, "stylish" is in the mind/paycheck of marketing folks.

If you are able to remove the short piece before installing back splash, do it! While the granite looks super busy in the picture, mine reads more like a gray in my kitchen (no short backsplash, so it's horizontal only)...but it hides everything! I have pure white (bm paper mache) bead board (we did a temporary low cost upgrade knowing that the major reno was still a few years out), and the solid white was the right choice for me.

Keep it simple since you have pattern in the granite. Use the lightest shade in the granite for the backsplash.

I agree with luckyblueeye...remove the 4-inch-ish granite backsplash before adding anything else.

Pick the shape you like! I wouldn't do a subway either, you don't need another long linear look in a long space already. Use a solid color, but not white; the pale gray looks good.

technically you have a b/s in the 4" granite strip.

if you want something else, then i agree with others to remove it.

look for pics with the 4" b/s and b/s on top, so you can see if you like the look.
