You have a fasciated scape. It's somewhat uncommon, and can be caused by weather, injury, or any number of other things. A given plant may produce these once and then never again, or every year. These growths will not grow roots and become a new plant, unfortunately.

"Fasciated" is not correct here. I call this "hyperfoliated" (with "foliated" being the key term, meaning "with leaves"). Fasciated is what broccoli raab does, with the stems fused together. You can see a truly fasciated scape at www.delvalhosta.org/hosta-lingo.

The cause for these hyperfoliated growths is unknown, but could be due to some hormonal imbalance. It's most often seen in juiced-up nursery-grown plants, and seems particularly common in the Maui Buttercups family (see Rainforest Sunrise).

And no, this will not root. Hostas require crown tissue to reproduce.

Sorry, it should probably be a brachiated scape, which is closer to correct but not exactly technically right either. Bracts are leaf clusters that grow flower stalks, and this is a scape that grew a bract, then the bract grew more scape. Thanks for the correction, this is what happens when I rush to answer without putting the brain in gear first!

It must have gotten dried out before I bought it, so maybe that's why? It's bound to happen with this crazy heat wave we've been having this spring/summer. So I won't get my hopes up for getting it to root. I already have two MB anyway but I am finding out that you can never have too many hostas!!!
