Something to be concerned about-the webs I mean? So sounds like I need to re-do the slug bait..... lots of work right now, laid up somewhat with knee injury.

Definitely not spiders eating your plant. Spiders are great garden friends.

The top leaf could be from a snail. Slug holes are smaller than that of a snail.

The bottom leaf looks more like the damage of a caterpillar or a cutworm (Peridroma saucia)

When your knee is better go out with a flashlight at night and do a check.

Yep, looks like cutworm to me. I just pulled a fat one off Ayesha yesterday.

I agree with peren.all---cutworm or caterpillar. The first hosta garden I was ever invited to was absolutely filled with lovely hosta! The owner said she had cutworm in a certain spot in her garden. That was the first I was ever aware of the damage cutworms could do. She said she would dig just under the soil especially near the crowns of hosta to find them. And I have.

This year my slug population is down. Hurray! But then we have had huge populations of caterpillars this year. I am finding large holes in my hostas! (Just like the photos shown.) If it's not one thing, then it's another!

Slug bait isn't going to reduce caterpillar damage. Only some types of slug bait work on cutworms.
