Consider a semi flush mount if your ceiling is 9 ft.

I don't know the color of the lantern as you didn't mention it. The diameter of your foyer so I don't know if this will work. I personally feel a semi flush on a 9' ceiling will look a lot nicer than a flush.

We are definitely open to a semi-flush mount. The only lights we've ordered so far are our island pendants:

We need a light for the front dining room (labeled flex), foyer, and hallway. The pass-thru (in lieu of the pantry) and the mudroom lights are both visible from this area, too. Should they all be the same? I'd planned on just cans for the living area and a chandelier in the nook, but I'm worried about coordination with other lights. We have plenty of cans in kitchen\nook\living...got great advice here regarding those.

Open to and grateful for suggestions for any of these areas! We like clean, simple lines-lanterns, glass, simple drum. Wouldn't mind mixing metals (husband likes nickel), but I'm not certain I could do it well.

Is the home built already or are you perusing lighting looking at what might love or lean toward?

I too love lanterns. My favorite is Darlana by Visual Comforts. Most any style works well paired with it whether an orb or other.

I take it you have your dining table or you wouldn't have selected and posted the fixture you like which is the linear lantern?

Sorry, a few questions as I don't want you to put the cart before the horse so to speak.....

I like the Darlana lantern, too, and I almost chose the Carmen version for our island. Husband likes the clear glass pendants better for that space so we went with them. He absolutely does not like orbs, but he can live with lanterns.

The house is under construction. Framing inspection is on Monday.

Perhaps the Darlana (for the entry) since it's not in the same space as the dining. That or a semi flush mount similar to what you are showing since you have a 9' ceiling. In the hallway you could do something like you show above. Is the hallway also 9'? Most anything will pair well with the lanterns and simplicity of the proposed idea for the hall lighting.

I know it's great to start to get ideas and so on, but I would wait until it's at least to the drywall up stage so you can better visualize the home vs. on paper to avoid costly mistakes. In concept this all seems very nice and simple, but pretty. Yet, I would wait until you have the drywall up at minimum and as you are doing print out some ideas of what you would like and where. I like the lantern idea for the entry with something completely different in the flex space than all the rest.

I take it the, "flex" space will be more often used for company and such?

This in the light linen would add a little (a single light) drama and switch things up a bit, yet still be simple and work well with a foyer lantern. They offer three colors. The height of the light might bee to great for the room though if it's a 9' ceiling as the cone shape would make the shade taller. .

Thank you for the suggestions, Porter. I like the drum pendants you posted above, and it seems it would be easy to coordinate other lighting with them. I'm still hung up on how to coordinate foyer and hall lights. I have the notion stuck in my head that they should be the same. I'll look around for some more photos and ideas.

I think the Drum might look very pretty in the dining area that is away from the kitchen and works well as you said with most anything too. It adds some simple elegance and works well with most all tables.

You could consider a semi flush similar in style like you posted above for the entry and then the flush that matches for hallways if you can't get your head around several styles. I don't think they need to match as much as be cohesive. I think once the drywall is up and the electrical boxes are installed you will better be able to visualize the rooms and spaces. I hope you agree as I'd want to see the space in person and actual size to my eye vs. on paper. I like a chandelier to be a bit larger vs. a bit smaller and so?

Electrical is already in. Not sure how things go with a custom build...ours is a production build in a custom neighborhood. Builder has allowed us to choose locations for cans but all the electrical went in before drywall. I assume drywall will be going in when framing inspection is complete. The builder's electrician said he would install our lights for us, but if we don't have them ready, they will just put in the standard builder lights. My husband was hoping to save himself the job of replacing all the lights, but it is not a problem for him if he has to do it.

Completely understand, nice to have somebody else do it. I would personally feel slightly wary of making financial mistakes and so on without seeing the space at least drywalled to better visualize size. In my minds eye once you get your decor in and look at the selections you then might feel things aren't what they seemed as you envisioned and in reality how they look with your furniture/decor/paint selection(s) and the rest are in the room once you are done.

I would keep a file of things you lean toward and wait :/ I know it's not easy and also is a pain to have your husband have to do the install. Then again, if you feel confident you know your furnishings well and all you could just go with your gut and take a small risk you aren't completely happy.

It's an exciting time to have a new home built and I'm sure you want it near to perfect. Perhaps I'm WAY too particular and should relinquish some of the control over things as such (if it were me in this situation) and go with the hall and foyer light selections. That's as far as I'd go myself Caroline. You know your furnishings. I take it you own them already so know what style you are seeking and decor you will be using.

The island pendants can be a bit easier as I'm sure you've done the math regarding spacing and how many you need over the island taking in to consideration the size light you've selected and the total size of your island.
