How can I make this room warmer and more inviting?

I live on the water. This room (11Wx18L) overlooking the water has 3 walls of windows with one open to my living, formal dining and kitchen (very open concept). Fabric choices must be indoor/outdoor despite having 3M film on the windows. Fabric must also blend with the rest of my funishings/fabrics since I can’t afford to change everything now. I use this room as a breakfast/lunch table and reading area. Here is my current plan but would love input!! Change out the 4 dining chairs out with rounded back from Fairfield Chair in a “pearl” finish ( http://www.furniturelandsouth.com/Fairfield-Chair-Co.-White-Occasional-Dining-Spider-Web-Back-Side-Chair-DZ23342.aspx). Cover seats in Manual Canovas Nemo ANIS (#4649-04). Repaint the 54" table top to match the pearl chair color and the pedestal the mustardy green color in the Nemo fabric. Place two new armless skirted chairs around the 34" game table that can be pulled up to the dining table when needed. Fabric: Manual Canovas Tamia Pistache 4650-02. Leave the chairs at the opposite end as is and add a square ottoman (36x36) Covered in Manual Canovas VANDA Lin 4652-01. I felt square ottoman rather than round since there are already two round tables in the room. Add drapery panels in a simple off white linen (ceiling to floor) and an area rug. I’m thinking a 9x16 wool sisel??? Attached is a picture of the room today as well as some pics of the adjoining living room (I know, it’s dated but can’t get to it today). Thanks. Peg

Great space Peggy, love the bookcase on the side, a nice way to separate two spaces. Understanding your need for all season materials, a sisal rug is a great choice. Make sure you keep it light so it will work with those chairs you have in mind - sisal can get a bit earthy. I really suggest either a border on the carpet or preferably round. You mentioned you have a few round surfaces, but I think the round carpet ties in more with the way you seem to be using the space, as round encourages conversation. the carpet should frame the arm chair sitting space behind the dining area, delineating between the two "zones", or so to speak. Open concept can be wonderful, but confusing.

I think your fabrics are nice, but you need a floral or bolder geometric to add some pop. Maybe you could pop in some brighter yellow? I think you are on your way to a beautiful room.

These suggestions are terrific and I love this Schumacher fabric but a bit too orange for my red/green/brown/yellow color scheme, no? So you don't think the pillows on the two beige chairs add enough pop. The beauty here is I can swap out pillows to provide different looks. A round rug is a great idea. I will try a few out. Adding a plant is an easy inexpensive solution so I'll look for one! How about window treatments. I don't want to block the view so I was thinking two 54" panels in each outside corner with one 54" panel next to the bookcase and one panel between each set of two windows. Hi all, I finally received my new furniture and could really use some advise/suggestions. I would like to add a new "round" rug under the ottoman (7 or 8') as well as window treatments. I'm thinking of panels hanging from ceiling (above transoms) to floor in a simple off white linen. What do you think? Also, should I leave the table skirt white or paint it the color of the table base? Any suggestions on a rug that will blend with the rug in the adjacent room?

You're doing just fine. With those linen color curtains, consider getting them with some sort of splash of light browns, and olive sort of colors. VERY WARMING, and i agree with the rug too. Mix the colors on the rug that warm your heart. THAT WILL DO THE TRICK. good luck. GREG

Window covers panels on ends and middle only. Great view don't want to lose it. But, will finish the look and warm it up. I would do a bold color like peacock also in a rug.

Remove some books and add colorful bowls instead, just a few.

Try a raspberry from your pillows for panels, and a print rug with that color or go solid.

Incredible views. I would go minimal on curtains as travisinterior suggests. Just to frame the view and warm up the room. I also like the idea of a pattern rug and pops of the color raspberry. What a lovely room. Your choices are spot on and you are doing it justice. I would love to see a photo when you have added the finishing touches.

Thank you all for the suggestions/comments! I've been agonizing over this room as it is not easy to blend everything in an open concept home! I think the idea of going minimal on the window treatments and bold on the floor might be the best idea since I do not want to take away from the view. I was thinking either ivory, green or brown for the area rug, however, I love the suggestion of going with raspberry in the rug! Question: Do you agree with just putting a round area rug under at the end of the room with the beige chairs and ottomans or should I do an are rug to cover the entire room?? I would prefer not having a rug under my breakfast table and chairs but if you think it will pull the room together...... (Sunday....I bought the tripod lamp at an antique shop in MA). Love and appreciate all your suggestions!!!!

I would prefer a round rug to keep the intimate cozy sitting area feel. I hope when I post a few rooms I will be decorating you will give me suggestions. You have a discerning eye, a true flair for design.

IMO there's way too many chairs. I think I counted 13 not counting the couch (I included the bar stools)? I like your style but it seems too much. However, I'm far from a professional (I'd call myself a professional thrifter but that's about it LOL!) so go with what the pros say!

I'm all for the wool sisal rug, but I'd have to agree - you're way over the top with the chairs and I only see the single red loveseat for more intimate seating. You have a lot of cute chair and chair and table vignettes set up but it is starting to look like the sales floor of a furniture store. In particular, the two round tables and 7 chairs in the windows area with the view; only one or two are arranged to take in the view! It's all too much! 'd like to see you exchange the two tables for one game sized square extension table that could fill both roles with room when needed for guest dining. The two "rolled and tucked" light green chairs with the red sofa look more "bedroomy" to me. Would they work better there? I love your rug and red sofa together but would rather see the two armless green chairs in that space, the game table eliminated entirely, and filmy sheers that could be drawn to filter light and glare from the water, but stacked back in the four corners and out of the way for enjoying the view.

Peggy, what's behind the green and white chairs in the living space? Anything nice to look at on that end of the room? I might suggest losing those two, as they seem rather fussy and block the flow. If extra seating is needed when guests come over, the other comfy chairs could merely be pulled around.

I also see too many chairs and table arrangements. I would wonder where to sit. I would try the love seat under the window. a big rug and just two chairs facing the window.

I count nine chairs in the room. That seems like a whole lot of chairs. Your room is looking crowded. Do you need that many chairs at once or are you just trying to fill space?

Just read other posts about all the chairs. Sometimes it's good to hear it from more than one person so you know it's an issue worth addressing.

There are two rooms, my living room and a sunroom. My living room has 3 chairs and a couch with a coffee table in the middle. The sunroom has my breakfast table with 4 wood chairs. Also in the long sunroom is a game table with 2 green slipper chairs and at the other end there are two swivel chairs and an ottoman.

In my original number of 13, I counted all chairs and bar stools. We're up to seating for 15 if you count the red love seat. Even though it's 2 rooms/3 spaces, I think it's just too much. Almost like you're leaving a funeral, and it's your home everyone will go to and that's why you put all the seating out. I like your style so please don't think I'm comparing it to a funeral! (That's just the first thing I thought of LOL) It's just too many. If you like seating for that many there all the time, maybe ad built in bench seating along window wall?

You have a wonderful space full of wonderful pieces, just a little over the top on quantity. If you are really attached to all of them, you might find a small storage unit and split them into seasonal selections to switch out occasionally. Really would like to see the green slipper chairs with the red sofa though instead of the other pair.

Based on all the feedback, I am going to rearrange and see what it will look like if I move the two green living room chairs and replace with the two slipper chairs. I will also remove the game table. I am concerned there will be a big gap between the breakfast table and the ivory chairs and ottoman, however, I will live with it for a few days.....maybe I will get used to the open space. Thanks!

I guess I meant the ivory chairs (ones with floral pillows and the matching ottoman w/tray) :) I have the same problem, btw. Too many chairs in my downsized house, and a stubborn other half who wants to keep all of them! I'd like to replace his fat stuffy arm chairs with something like your ivory chairs. Maybe swivel or at least club size. I love yours!

I think adding a rug with pattern would make the space look to busy - it doesnt look like its a very big room but i might be wrong. A rug is needed but something that adds a breadth of fresh air to this room. Im imagining an ivory rug ......

Check this armchair slipcovers https://www.houzz.com/hznb/photos/armchair-slipcover-jacquard-3d-collection-beige-arabesco-miami-phvw-vp~169656909 . Also Mamma Mia Covers has covers for ottoman too. You can check diferrent colors and material, but I want to say that it's very practice material, pets friendly and easy to wash. I hope my advice can help you!
