I would immediately remove the carpeting which can cause falls. Some soles stick to the bottom and backs of the risers. I have carpeting on old house steps from our bedroom and have to be very careful walking down them. You can buy risers to install at box stores, if you have to replace them. We have the very same configuration and no carpeting made the difference from our back door -- kitchen basement problem.

Our Foursquare has the same side entrance with industrial carpet strips stapled to top of each step. No issues so far.

This is exactly what I want for our steps. Do you have a door at the top of the stairs there?

I do lots of work on this type of home, not much you can do other than keep stairs in good condition and provide graspable handrails.

I know some eliminated that door, but the majority of homes leave a side door entrance leading directly into the basement or access up right into the kitchen from the driveway as a convenience...

Some homeowners who use these types of homes as rental property (depending on the layout) use that door as a separate entrance for 2nd-floor access.

That being said unless you plan to do a major remodeling and do structural changes not much can be changed...not to mention one of the homeowners eliminated the side door and installed an elevator :-)
