Front Entry Advice

We just replaced the roof and plan on replacing the shutters and painting the exterior. My issue is what to do about the front door/window. We definitely want to replace both but it's driving me nuts that it's off center - any ideas? The door can't move left b/c of the stairs just inside. The window could go away or change shapes. Also open to any other exterior/curb appeal ideas you may have (other than changing/replacing the roof....that ship has sailed)

I'd avoid mullions as you don't have any in your house. Does that window by the door open? If the window is of decent quality, leave it alone. Add a door one of these. Since it bothers you that the entrance isn't centered, consider adding an entry walkway from the street. Make the garden even with the edge of the house, not encroaching upon the sightline of the door. Then bring the walkway down to the street (where the picture was taken from). Curve the walkway to trick the eye into thinking the porch is centered.

Longer window which as more like a sidelight, and definitely a new front door. The mock Victorian look, with oval window, (and I bet mock leaded glass insert) is not right for the style of your house…or any house for that matter. Just awful! Glad you are replacing.

Are the windows adapted for snap-in muntons? I think those alone would make a huge difference in your curbside appeal.

I don’t think the windows can be adapted - they are super cheap replacements added by prior owner. Wish i had the originals (I think).

Should longer window be as wide as current? Or if narrower how to place? I was thinking of a door with a sidelight but then that makes the whole entry feel even more lopsided? My gut is that the door needs to be wider than the window but the window should be more to the right? Centered? Wish i had some photoshop skills!

No that window does not open - and the glass is permanently frosted.

What about doing a double door but only the one on the right was actually operable. Who would know the one on the left didn't actually open?

You can get a relatively plain door and do a double. I live in a neighborhood of early 70's split levels and many of them have original double doors that look awesome. Make it the focal point

BTW, Therma-tru has an app that you can use to see how new doors will look on your house. you create the door on their website, download the app, take a picture of your existing door and then use the app to see what the door will look like on your house. It's eerily accurate.
