Tree trunk cracking

Hi,

This is the first time, I am seeing this happen to our tree. Any thoughts on this? I am no tree-expert and worried if the tree is going to die. I read that this could be due to frost in the winter. In North Carolina, our winters are in the Dec - Feb time-frame. Is it too late to save the tree?

Can't help you with the trees, but do you want to improve your lawn?

Thank you dchall. I am in the process of improving my lawn..thanks to this forum :). Didn't realize there is a trees forum. I will post it there.
