Very interesting. I'm particularly interested in seed-grown [cold-hardy citrus] trees because of the possibility they might turn out to be new hybrids.

The fruit (and seed) originally came from a citrus grower in VA Beach a long time ago via the Citrus Expo.

Grafted to Poncirus Trifoliata roots, Just barely. The fruit ripens 2 months earlier than 3-3 and that is the clincher of being worth growing

It doesn't seem to be growing the best (but that may be since it's in Olympia, WA, some pretty cool temperatures much of the time, even though it can get pretty hot too, and widely fluctuating temperatures between day and night)

Whether 2-2 or 3-3, I don't know. I do recall the fruit tasted pretty good!

in my area it would be killed 5 out of 10 years. Some protection would be needed in my micro climate. Grapting to PT gives it 5F colder resistance

bk: No, I mean it would probably survive only one out of 8 winters. But who knows? I have lost much hardier citrus outdoors.

What have you lost that was hardier?

Citrandarin and Citrumelo were both killed in the back-to-back vortex winters. I did not protect them. The citrumelo was 14 feet tall!

Bob I am so glad to see a seed grown kumquat tree grow and fruit so well. I am guessing you have a Meiwa or a Marumi.

It might have been more accurate to have named it "11.5 degree tangerine". I don't think it actually survives down to 10 degrees too well.

Your tree is to young to have that level of cold hardiness. When it is 10 feet tall and a well branched full tree it will go even colder as long as it had a long hardening off period. I wish you well on your tree.

Typically the lowest it gets here is 15 F, and there are only 3 or 4 nights out of the year that drop below 20 F. Most nights in Winter are above 26-28 F.

The real problem is that average daytime temperatures are below 50 F for half the year.
