Beautiful home! I suggest a dark color for the trim and shutters. I also would get rid of the arches. Last I would take out at least 50percent of the bushes to the left of the front door. Then add dramatic large lighting in the front.

Beautiful home! I wouldn't try to make it look taller. This long and low ranch is a very cool style unto itself.

I agree with straightening out the curves above the porch and the garage.

You're fortunate to have dark, interesting windows. I'd remove the shutters.

I'd try a creamy, light beige color on the body of the house. Maybe similar to the color of the shutters and paint the garage door a dark color like the windows and front door.

Looong and lean is the style of this house, which is very attractive. Appreciate it for its own style. Trying to make it into something else may spoil its charm.

It's hard to see the color in the picture, so some closer up photos of the front door area, for example, would help us to make recommendations.

I like the arches, but if you don't then it would probably be fairly easy to remove them. I don't think that the shutters are appropriate for the style of the house, and I would remove them altogether. Although I realize that in some areas of the country, shutters are the norm.

The landscaping could use a bit of a boost,. Again, close up pictures of the house, going across, would probably bring out some suggestions on a landscape update.

Lovely home but I see your point. You do notice a long line of roof. The stone seems to get lost in the grey color. A lighter paint.

Thanks everyone for your ideas. I couldn't edit the original posting so I am posting the before and after. here. I think I am stuck with the arches, in the picture after I removed the arches, the house looks quite boring!

Check out fixer upper; almost all their houses are long lean ranch styles that they modernize. I love your home, but then I have a 90 foot long ranch house myself! lol. Congratulations.

The arches are so gentle, they are barely there.
I would love to see it in pale gray or pale green with dark gray trim.
The long low-slung look is modern again.
If the stone by the front door has been painted, take it back to its natural color.
Keep this charmer in the family!

@Susan Davis I did check out fixer upper, we'd have to shell out some serious dough to get updates like those in fixer upper. Was hoping to be able to make some minor improvements. For now, we'll just get the siding painted and call it a day!

This is a great house. The arches won't be hard to get rid of. Get rid of the shutters, too. I'd keep the same green color; it goes well with the stone. The only things I'd paint are the fascia and the posts. In fact, I'm going to paint them for you now.

Get rid of the monster hedge bushes. Will make the house look significantly larger..

While it might need a new coat of paint, it looks like it was lovingly maintained. Please don't add a giant gable to this house. It is a real gem. What is re-enforcing the horizontal lines are the long row of shrubs (yews?) on both sides of the foundation. Get rid of some of them so you can see the whole elevation. Remove the arches and the shutters, which also tend to flatten the lines of the house. A new coat of fresh paint and you should be good to go.

Your house does not look like a modern ranch. It looks like an amazing 1950s rambling ranch home. They were inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright.

The Malcolm Willey House

You obviously are not the owner of the Willey house, but I posted this so you could see that your home is architecturally iconic. You just can't tell how lovely it is with that massive row of hedges. Keep the colors simple earth tones. Lighten the colors, add white trim, get rid of the shutters and show off the beauty of the home.

Take a clipping of the hedges in to the local garden center to ask when and how the hedges can be pruned. If you can reduce them to just over knee height without killing them, that'd give you a completely new proportion for shrub+house.

Some houses of this era were designed to have purely decorative shutters, so don't rule those out completely as a colorful vertical accent. Just wrap them up before storing them if you want to take them down for a year or so.

Yes, the hedges reinforce that long lean look, which is good. They are only a bit too tall. Prune them so you can see the bottom of the windows. I'm not a fan of the ball-shaped shrubs in front of the front door. Maybe you can let them grow out to a more natural shape. As recommended by @apple_pie_order, your local nursery can advise you if you bring them a photo and a sprig.

I trimmed your hedges to just below the windows. Your landscaping is actually quite lovely; the hedges just need to be kept in bounds. If the current paint is in good condition, I'd straighten those arches, paint the trim, and be done.

Add a photo of the stone near the door, showing the full doorway area. Include some white paper for camera color balance. Often a new color scheme is easy to pick from the stones.

The only thing I would do is trim the bushes, add some colorful landscaping and remove the shutters. This is a gorgeous house.

Gorgeous modern home and obviously great Chi if great aunt is 98. Don't muck it up. Modern is an architectural style of house and you have it, lucky you! I like the simple suggestions from Groveraxle. Straightening the arches is more in line with modern architecture.

Wow, I love this home. I think the most I'd change is painting the garage and front door to match the shutters or remove the shutters and paint the siding a lighter color. I personally find the landscaping quite nice.
I can only imagine how beautiful the inside is!

Paint the garage door white ...and put more trees in front...I would do only landscaping changes ...it's a beautiful house ...don't change a thing ...just the garden and some more trees in front ...enjoy !!

I, too, would embrace your home's long, low profile and not try and make it look taller. It is really quite nice. I like Grover's rendering in which the shutters and arches are removed and the window frames/mullions are painted black like the porch windows. That, along with some landscape tweaking as mentioned above, will update the house and make it even more stunning.
