I always like a mirror near the entry. And you could add some bright art along the stairs to brighten it up.

Organizational wise I'd say add pegs low to the ground for shoe hanging at the door level and up on the wall for backpacks and such at the landing. If that's a coat closet on the landing, I'm make use of it instead for everything and just add a mirror and small shelf near the door.
It this is your main entrance I'd add curtain for privacy and move the keys somewhere hidden and not so easily accessible to outsiders.

A, yes it is a coat closet at the top of the landing. Where were you suggesting the bench? It wouldn't fit on either the ground floor or the landing because of the door.

I was going to suggest redoing the closet, if indeed that was a closet.
Below is a picture showing before and after of how I did our back entry closet awhile back. Surprisingly removing the rod and adding double hooks, smaller child friendly hooks low on the sides for little ones to reach, adds so much more space. I used shoe shelves that I had on hand, but I like A's idea of building a bench too. I'd personally still want to be able to close the door. Add an over the door clear pocket shoe organizer for mittens, hats and other little necessities makes a coat closet even more efficient.
Our home is a work in progress, which is why there is no baseboard inside the closet. We'll get there.

Is there no room in the coat closet for the shoes and bags? You could add some art going up the stairs. There are baskets that fit stairs. Maybe that would work to place shoes in. There doesn't appear to be room for a bench or table. Maybe a small colorful rug.

Hi SJS, there is some room but we have a lot of shoes and really no other organizational method other than an already fill shoe rack
